Sweeney, a 1988 College of Business Administration graduate, broke seven team water polo career records, including career points (347), career assists (132) and best shooting percentage (.693). He was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Metropolitan Championships for four straight years (1985-88) and to the All-Tournament Team, Mid-Atlantic Conference in 1986 and 1987. A four-year letterman with the water polo squad, Sweeney was named team's Most Valuable Player in 1986, 1987 and 1988.
 
Following graduation, Sweeney served as a coach for the team in 1989 and 1990, assisting in the program's rebuilding process.
