Faculty Athletic Representative

The Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) shall be appointed by the president from members of the faculty (Article 6.1.3 NCAA Constitution) to represent Fordham University and its faculty in the institution’s relationships with the NCAA and its conference (Constitution 4.02.2). The FAR is a discretionary appointee of the President for a term of office of 3 years with the possibility of reappointment.
 
The FAR assists the director of intercollegiate athletics, the athletic administrative staff, coaches, and the University president to provide leadership and oversight of the intercollegiate athletics program.
 
The FAR will be broadly aware of all institutional, Atlantic 10, Patriot League, and NCAA issues as well as play a central role in communicating matters related to athletics to constituents and/or groups across the University. Faculty and other members of the Fordham community should have an opportunity to learn about the work of the FAR and direct relevant questions or concerns to the FAR about the athletic administration or direction of the intercollegiate athletics program.
 
The University will provide appropriate resources to the FAR consistent with the responsibilities listed below and will recognize the time and energy required for these duties to be effectively executed. Resources provided to the FAR will be subject to annual approval by the University president and the provost. Expenses associated with the performance of these responsibilities will be paid through the Office of the President.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Represent Fordham University to the NCAA, Patriot League, and Atlantic 10.
  • Serve as a delegate to all NCAA meetings and conventions, as well as NCAA councils, cabinets, and committees, as appropriate.
  • Be well versed and knowledgeable regarding NCAA, Patriot League, and Atlantic 10 legislation and policies.
  • Be knowledgeable about all institutional investigations, alleged violations, and student infractions.
  • Assist in the preparation of any requests for waivers or appeals from NCAA, Patriot League, and Atlantic 10 legislation or policy, including eligibility requirements and restoration.
  • Be knowledgeable of all secondary and major violations to the NCAA.
  • Serve as faculty advisor to the president regarding athletics.
  • Establish professional relationships with the director of intercollegiate athletics and senior athletic administrators, as well as the areas of admissions, housing, financial aid, etc.
  • Be visible to the student-athletes: monitor the student-athlete experience and be involved in the personal and academic welfare of the students.
  • Participate in orientation activities as needed.
  • In conjunction with the director of intercollegiate athletics and the compliance office, ensure that student-athletes understand and meet all NCAA, Patriot League, Atlantic 10, and Fordham University requirements for eligibility to practice and compete.
  • Assist with oversight of academic eligibility decisions.
  • Coordinate the nomination process for NCAA, Patriot League, and Atlantic 10 postgraduate scholarships and honors.
  • Report to the faculty and administration periodically about the academic wellbeing of student-athletes, performance, rules or compliance violations, and other matters related to the athletics program.
  • Attend athletics meetings as needed.
  • Participate in Fordham University’s Athletic Advisory Board, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness (IDEA) Committee, and other groups as necessary.
