Lansing won a starting job as a sophomore and helped the 1940 and 1941 teams to back to back 8-1 seasons. The 1940 team was invited to the Cotton Bowl, where they lost 13-12 to Texas A&M, while the 1941 team went to the Sugar Bowl, where they defeated Missouri 2-0. Lansing received All-American honors for the Rams in 1941, as the squad traveled coast-to-coast losing only to Pittsburgh, and was awarded the Lambert Trophy as the East's best team.

His Fordham career was briefly interrupted during World War II, but after the war Lansing returned to Fordham and served as team captain in 1946. In 1947 Lansing was appointed an assistant coach by head coach Ed Donowski. He served as an assistant under Danowski until Fordham dropped football in 1955.
He then became head coach of Blessed Sacrament High School in New Rochelle, and spent one season with the semi-professional Mt. Vernon Eagles.

In 1965, when football was reinstated as a club team, Lansing returned to Fordham to coach and led the Rams to national club championships in 1965 and 1968 and then saw the sport elevated to varsity status in 1970.
