While at Fordham, John played varsity football for three years and was one of the original "Seven Blocks of Granite", playing on the great Fordham teams of the late twenties and early thirties. They were known for their tremendous defensive strength, allowing just one touchdown to be scored through their line in two years. He was also given All-East honors.
