"Dandy Dick" Doheny, as he was known during his gridiron days at Rose Hill, quarterbacked the Maroon to a 16-10 record over the 1948-50 seasons, including an 8-1 mark in 1950.

In 1949, Doheny led the nation in passing percentage (.621) as he piled up 88 completions in just 140 attempts, and threw for 1,127 yards and 13 touchdowns. Fordham's 183.4 yards passing per game led the nation in '49. He also named winner of the Madow trophy, given to the MVP of the Fordham-NYU game. Doheny matched those lofty statistics in the Maroon's 1950 campaign, completing 79 tosses in 143 tries for 1,252 yards and 12 TDs. Included in the Rams eight victories that year were wins over national powerhouses Boston College, West Virginia, and NYU. For his feats during the 1950 season, Doheny was named All-America.
