Hand's career was highlighted in 1958 when he established the Fordham one mile record of 4:14.7 at the IC4A race at Villanova University. That same year he was a member of the four mile relay team which set a school record at the Penn Relays. The previous year, Hand won the Met AAU one mile race as well as the Met Indoor IC4A 1000 yard run and he was a member of the two mile relay team which earned the Met AAU title. Hand served as a team captain in 1957-58, leading the Rams to a fourth place finish at the IC4A Indoor Championships. That same year, he was also named the track MVP and finished as the runner-up for the Fordham Athlete of the Year Award.

In 1979, Hand started competing in long distance races, competing in 24 marathons, including 15 consecutive Boston Marathons from 1981-95.
