He was undefeated in the 500 free in his Fordham dual meet career and was named the 1978 and 1979 Metropolitan Collegiate Swim Conference Division I Swimmer of the Year. May was a two-time NCAA qualifier, including winning the Eastern Seaboard championship and qualifying in the 500 freestyle in 1977. At the 1978 Metropolitan Championships he won the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle races to be named Division I MVP and finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in those events at the Eastern Championships.

As a junior and senior, May won the 200, 500, and 1650 freestyle at the Metropolitan Championship, setting the school record in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle as a senior.
A two-time Most Valuable Player of the men's swimming squad, May served as a co-captain of the 1977-78 and 1978-79 teams. He capped off his Fordham career by winning the 1979 Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial award as the school's top male athlete.

Following his Fordham days, May went on to compete and coach the New York Athletic Club from 1984-92.
