Voted as an All-American in 1940 and All-East tackle in 1941, Joe played practically sixty minutes of every game. A workmanlike ballplayer deserving of many honors, Joe was voted player of the game vs. Rice in 1939. In that contest, Ungerer was in at least fifty percent of the tackles in the Rams' 13-7 victory.
