Staten Island, N.Y. – (December 2, 2023) – The Fordham track & field team had its opening meet of the season on Saturday night, as the Rams took part in the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational, hosted by St. John's at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. No team scoring was kept.
The night was highlighted by a pair of relay wins for the Rams. First, the women's 4x800 relay of
Megan McCann,
Scarlett Anderson,
Brenna Sears, and
Mary Kathryn Underwood won their event in a time of 9:31.59. Then in the men's 4x400 relay, Fordham's group of
Kevin Callaghan,
Christopher Martinez,
Dakota Strain, and
Matthew Nurse won the event in 3:24.99.
Aside from the two event wins, the Rams had several top ten finishers on the night.
For the men,
Michael Croke grabbed second in the pole vault, clearing 14' 3 ¼" with Martinez taking fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 41' 3 ¼". In the long jump,
Justin Rhee was sixth at 21' 5 ½" with
Eric Galante in tenth at 20' 9 ¼".
On the track,
Liam Volz placed fifth in the 300-meter dash in 35.86 seconds, while Nurse was also fifth in the 500-meter run in 1:05.50. Additionally, Callaghan was seventh in the 500 meters (1:06.47) with
Erik Brown in eighth (1:06.62).
Trevor Rinn also had a successful run in the 1,000 meters, finishing sixth overall in 2:37.31.
In the women's competition,
Alexandra Manetovic had a pair of top five finishes, taking third in the high jump, clearing 5' 1", while being fifth in the triple jump at 36' 9 ¼".
Skylar Harris also had a top five in the field events, placing fourth in the long jump at 17' 6 ¾", followed by
Leia Ruvo in seventh (16' 11 ¼").
On the track,
Kyla Hill led the way by finishing sixth in the 300-meter dash in 39.99 seconds, while
Abigail Llach was seventh in the 1,000 meters in 3:10.56.
Dillyn Green was tenth in the 300 meters (41.23) with
Michele Daye (26.37) and Harris (26.40) placing ninth and tenth, respectively in the 200-meter dash.
The last top ten finishers for Fordham included
Sarah Cooley in the shot put (10
th – 36' 3") and the 4x400 relay team of
Alexandra Williams,
Anna Maria Ivits,
Sophia Crucs, and Daye (6
th – 4:03.46.
The Rams are now off until they compete at the Lions Indoor Invitational on January 12
th.
