Kingston, R.I. - (Feb. 4, 2012) - While some of the Fordham track & field team were at the New Balance Invitational, the rest of the squad took part in the Tribute to Charley Torpey Invitational on Saturday, which was held at Mackal Fieldhouse in Kingston, Rhode Island to honor the former La Salle cross country and track coach, who passed away this past summer.
Fordham's day was highlighted by three event wins in the women's competition. Junior Courtnay Newman won the high jump event, clearing a career-best and ECAC qualifying height of 5' 7", while sophomore Anisa Arsenault won the 3,000 meter run in 9:59.80. The Rams' final winner was the distance medley relay team, which won the event in a season-best time of 12:23.47.
Fordham also had seven other top five finishes on the women's side, led by Kelly Connolly, who was second in the 500 meter run in 1:17.65 and helped the 4x400 relay team to a second place finish in 3:56.55.
The 4x800 relay team earned a third place finish in 9:55.20 with Titi Fagade, Elisabeth Warren, and Emily Osman each earning a fourth place finish. Fagade's came in the 400 meter dash in a season-best time of 58.22 seconds with Warren's in the long jump (17' 1 ¼") and Osman's in the 1,000 meters in a season-best time of 3:01.13. The final top five finish came from Erin Lunny, who took fifth in the mile run in a season-best time of 5:09.66.
In the men's competition, Fordham had 11 top five finishes, led by Nick Delligatti and the 4x400 relay team. Delligatti was second in the 500 meter run in 1:05.79, while the relay team also placed second in 3:32.83.
The Rams also earned third place finishes in the 60 meter dash, 400 meter dash, high jump and distance medley relay events. Lourenzo Smith took third in the 60 meter dash in 7.05 seconds, followed by Sean Atkinson , who was third in the 400 meter dash in 49.57 seconds, and David Fajoyomi, who cleared 6' 8 ¼" for third. The final bronze finish was in the distance medley relay in 11:09.63.
Other notable performances came from Michael Rossi, who was fifth in the 500 meters (1:06.29), Ryan Polo, who was fifth in the 800 meters in a career-best time of 1:56.93, Jonathan Annelli, who was fourth in the 3,00 meter run in 8:41.84, and Keegan Talty, who cleared a career- and season-best mark of 14' 6 ¼" in the pole vault.
In the relays, Fordham picked up fourth in the 4x800 relay (8:09.72) and third in the distance medley relay (1:09.63).
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on February 10th, when the Rams travel to Boston for the Valentine's Day Classic.
