Piscataway, N.J. - (Jan. 7, 2012) - The Fordham track & field team was back in action for the first time in a month on Saturday at the Rutgers Invitational in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Rams had a good showing, posting five event wins and 28 top four finishes, but the highlight came in the men's 500 meters when the first school record of the season fell.
Fordham junior Sean Atkinson broke the Rams' school record in the 500 meters, placing second in an IC4A qualifying time of 1:03.06. The previous school record was held by Brian Schmidt at 1:03.17.
For the event wins, Fordham took home first place in both 4x800 relay races, both 3,000 meter runs and the men's 800 meter run.
In the men's 800 meters, John Cosgrove won the event with a season-best time of 1:55.30, while in the 3,000 meter run, transfer Erin Lunny won the women's race in 10:05.27, while Kevin Harvey took home the men's race in 8:56.33. Fordham also grabbed second and third in the men's 3,000 meters, as Jonathan Annelli (9:04.27) and Tim Kazanjian (9:06.26) were right behind Harvey.
In the 4x800 relay, the Fordham women won with a time of 9:42.15, while the men placed first in 7:58.93.
Other top performers included Kevin Fitzgerald, who was second in the 1,000 meter run (2:27.85 - IC4A qualifier), Averie Sheppard, who was second in the 60 meter dash (8.24) and fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.60), Kristen Stuart, who took second in the 400 meter dash (59.50), and Titi Fagade, who was second in the 500 meter dash (1:16.68).
In other relay action, Fordham was third in the women's 4x400 relay in 4:01.56, while the men's 4x400 relay was second in an IC4A qualifying time of 3:19.73.
In the field events, Fordham's best finishes came in the high jump, as Courtnay Newman was third in the women's event, clearing 5' 3", while Sam Houston was also third in the men's event, clearing 6' 2".
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on Friday, January 13th, when the Rams compete at the NYU Gotham Cup, held at the Armory Track & Field Center.
