Track & Field Takes Part in Metropolitan Championship

Women Place Second, While Men Finish Fourth

New York, N.Y. – (April 8, 2023) – The Fordham track & field team took part in the 2023 Metropolitan Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday, held at Icahn Stadium in New York.
 
The Rams had a good day, as the women finished second out of 14 teams with 120.5 points, trailing only team champion, Columbia (150), while the men were fourth out of 12 teams with 76 points, behind Columbia (162), NJIT (122), and Manhattan (104).
 
For the women, the Rams won three events on the day, beginning with Mary Kathryn Underwood taking first in the 1,500 meters in 4:39.76, followed by Helen Connolly in second (4:41.67) and Caroline McDonagh in eighth (4:54.50).  Underwood and Connolly returned to the track later in the 4x400 relay, where they joined Michele Daye and Ruby Avila to place second in 4:00.60.
 
Fordham's other event winners came in the field events, starting with Kathryn Kelly taking first in the long jump with a mark of 18' 9 ½".  Skylar Harris also scored in the event, placing fifth at 17' 3 ½".  Kelly was a part of the 4x100 relay as well with Dillyn Green, Ileana Chlorou, and Kyla Hill, placing second in 47.94 seconds. 
 
Then, Alexandra Manetovic won the triple jump event with a mark of 37' 4".  Manetovic also scored sixth in the high jump (5' 3"), joining Jana Rokitta in third (5' 3"), Leia Ruvo in fifth (5' 3"), and Alison Burton in seventh (5' 1").  Out of the field events, Fordham scored in one other event, the shot put, with Amanda Gurth finishing eighth with a mark of 35' 5 ¼".
 
Other top performers included the 4x800 relay team of Molly Mulvaney, Taylor Mascetta, Alexandra Thomas, and Marin Bogulski, that placed second in 9:43.16.  Bogulski also scored individually in the 800 meters in fourth place (2:18.92).
 
Green scored twice individually in addition to her 4x100 relay performance.  She was fourth in the 200 meters at 25.32 seconds and fifth in the 100 meters at 12.57 seconds.  Alexandra Williams finished the scoring in the sprint events, taking seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.82.
 
Fordham scored in both hurdle events as well with Nicole Lytle in fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.94) and Sophia Crucs taking fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.04).
 
The final events that the Rams scored in for the women were the 5,000-meter run with Caitrina Barton in fourth (18:34.28) and the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Clodagh McGroary in fifth (12:00.03) and Sarah Raubenheimer in sixth (12:17.73).
 
On the men's side, the Rams were second in four events, starting with the 1,500 meters, as Rodolfo Sanchez was second in 4:00.08, followed by Steven Zucca in third (4:00.33) and Yariv Simhony in seventh (4:04.68).  Simhony was also a part of the 4x400 relay with Kevin Callaghan, Erik Brown, and Matthew Nurse, which finished second in 3:20.99.
 
Zalen Nelson also earned a second-place finish in the 800 meters in 1:51.65 with Ben Borchers scoring seventh (1:55.05) and Nathan Bezuneh in eighth (1:55.36).  The trio all returned in the 4x800 relay with Trevor Rinn to score second in 7:53.68.
 
In the sprint events, Christian Weddington and Matthew Nurse both scored sixth in the respective events, as Weddington was sixth in the 100 meters (11.03) and Nurse took sixth in the 200 meters (22.41).  Weddington was also a part of the 4x100 relay with Liam Volz, Jonah Coleman, and Kenneth Maxwell, which was seventh in 43.60 seconds.  The last sprint was the 110-meter hurdles, where George Pomer scored sixth in 17.05 seconds.
 
The distance events saw Fordham score in the steeplechase and 5,000-meter run, starting with Justin Lombardi taking sixth in the steeplechase (10:01.16) with Nicolas Grabarz in seventh (10:01.42).  Ryan Fahey then placed fifth in the 5,000 meters in 15:20.12.
 
Over in the field events, Michael Croke had the top finish in third, clearing 13' 11 ¼" in the pole vault event, while Justin Rhee was fourth in the long jump (21' 4") and seventh in the triple jump (42' 3").
 
The Rams will next be in action on April 14-15 at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted at Princeton University.
