Boston, Mass. – (March 4, 2023) – It was a banner day for the Fordham track & field team on Saturday as they began competition at the ECAC/IC4A Championship, held at the BU Track & Tennis Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Rams set four school records on the day, qualified for six Sunday finals, and scored in two events.
The scoring events for Fordham on Saturday came in the women's weight throw and high jump events.
Tiffany Hanna scored fourth in the weight throw event with a school record distance of 61' 1 ½", breaking her own record from earlier this year (58' 2"), followed by
Casey Metzler, who placed 23
rd overall with a mark of 48' 6 ¾". Then in the high jump,
Jana Rokitta scored fifth overall, clearing 5' 5".
Then came the Rams' qualifiers, beginning with
Kyla Hill in the 60-meter dash, as she qualified third for the finals by tying her own school record at 7.57 seconds. Hill returned to the track in the 200-meter dash and added her second school record of the day, qualifying fifth for the finals in 24.14 seconds, breaking
Kathryn Kelly's mark of 24.22 seconds, set in 2020.
Hill later joined the 4x400 relay team with
Dillyn Green,
Alexandra Williams and
Molly Mulvaney to qualify seventh for Sunday's final in a season-best time of 3:49.36.
The final qualifier for the women was the 4x800 relay team of
Taylor Mascetta,
Helen Connolly,
Alexandra Thomas, and
Mary Kathryn Underwood, who was fifth in a season-best time of 9:16.60. Connolly and Underwood had run earlier in the day in the 800-meter run event, as Underwood was 20
th overall in 2:14.71, while Connolly took 25
th in 2:15.47.
On the men's side,
Zalen Nelson had a big day, as he qualified first in the 1,000-meter run with a school record time of 2:24.17, breaking his own school record from a year ago at 2:24.90.
The Rams' other Sunday final qualifier was the 4x400 relay team of
Kevin Callaghan,
Erik Brown,
Matthew Nurse, and
Yariv Simhony, who were sixth in a season-best time of 3:17.75.
Other Saturday competitors for Fordham were
Rodolfo Sanchez in the mile run (22
nd – 4:10.58),
Christian Weddington in the 200-meter dash (29
th – 22.13 – season-best), and
Steven Zucca in the 5,000-meter run (12
th – 14:28.48).
