Fairfax, Va. – (February 23, 2019) – Day one of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship is in the books at Mason Field House in Fairfax, Virginia. It was a solid first day for the Fordham men's track & field team, as they sit in sixth place through five events, having scored in three on day one, while qualifying for two finals on Sunday.
Highlighting the day, junior
Ryan Kutch defended his 5,000-meter event title, taking gold in a time of 14:41.44. Also scoring on day one for Fordham was sophomore
Nikolas Reardon and the men's distance medley relay. Reardon placed fifth overall in the long jump event with a distance of 22' 5 ¾".
Kyle Mack is in the finals of the 500 meters on Sunday
The men's distance medley relay team of
Will Whelan,
Andre Guthrie, Jr.,
Jack Keegan, and
Brandon Hall took eighth overall in 10:26.39.
Three Rams also punched their ticket into Sunday finals in the 500 meter run and the 800 meter run.
Arthur Gooden Jr. qualified third in the 500 meters at 1:05.20, while teammate
Kyle Mack was sixth in qualifying at 1:06.25.
Christopher Strzelinski was the final Sunday qualifier, as he was fourth in the 800-meter preliminaries with a time of 1:56.63.
Multi-event athletes
Andrew Byrne and
Connor McKeown have also set themselves up to score in the heptathlon event. Through the first four events, Byrne is third with 2,669 points, while McKeown is seventh with 2,327 points. Byrne's highlights were being second among the heptathlon competitors in the long jump (21' 7 ¼") and high jump (6' 6"), with McKeown's highest finish being fourth in the high jump (5' 10 ¾").
In addition to these performances, Fordham just missed out on scoring or qualifying for finals on three occasions.
Jeremiah LaDuca was ninth in the preliminaries of the 800 meters at 1:58.49, while
Sean Sullivan was ninth in the preliminaries of the 1,000 meters at 2:30.48. Then,
Ryan McGraw just missed scoring in the long jump, placing ninth with a mark of 21' 6".
Day two of the Atlantic 10 Championship begins at 9:00 AM.
