Fairfax, Va. – The Fordham women's track and field team opened competition at the 2017 Athlantic 10 Championship on Saturday at George Mason's Field House.
Though the Rams did not score on day one, Fordham will have three runners in Sunday's finals.
Merissa Wright had the top qualifying
time in the 800 meter run on Saturday.
The highlight of the day came in the 800 meter run, where
Merissa Wright won her heat in a personal best time of 2:12.56.
In the 200 meter run,
Mary Kate Kenny qualified sixth for the final, recording a time of 25.25.
Sydney Snow qualified eighth for the final in the 1,000 meter run in a time of 2:58.13.
Aside from the three qualifiers for Sunday, Kenny tied
Nkeka Pinheiro's school record in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.82, good for tenth. Pinheiro finished right behind Kenny in the 200 meter dash in a time of 7.85, good for 11th.
Angelina Grebe just missed out on the finals in the 5,000 meter run, posting a time of 17:43.54, good for ninth.
Other individual performers on Saturday included
Kaia Corthell who turned in a season-best time in the 800 meter run (12
th – 2:19.42),
Laurel Fisher (13
th – 3:02.49) and
Blake Elwood (18
th – 3:06.51) in the 1,000 meter run and
Georgeanne Siller (15
th – 1:19.97) in the 500 meter run.
Freshman Sydney Snow placed
sixth in the 1,000 meter run
on Saturday.
Gabrielle Schreib led the Rams in the pentathlon, finishing tenth with 2, 987 points. Schreib was followed by
Kylie Farrell (11
th – 2,950) and
Alina Kwiatkowski (16
th – 2,501).
Gabriella Gavalas finished 15
th in the long jump at 16-4 ¼.s
The final event on day one was the distance medley relay, where Fordham's team of
Kate McCormack,
Leah Hickey,
Aidan Moroz and
Shanna Heaney finished tenth in 12:25.50.
Sunday's action at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship begins at 9:00 AM.
