Box Score Charlottesville, Va. – With a 4-2 win over Davidson in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Atlantic 10 women's tennis championship at the Boar's Head Sports Club today, the Fordham University women's squad punched its first ever ticket to the semifinals where the Rams will face top-seeded VCU on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
Fordham, who defeated Rhode Island yesterday, picks up its second win at the championship for the first time since 2002, the first since the conference eliminated the back draw in 2013.
The Rams opened the match by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches. Davidson's Anna Feaster and Ally Sexton started doubles action by defeating
Bella Genkina and
Anika Novacek, 8-1, at second doubles, forcing the Rams to have to win the other two matches to gain the point. And that just what Fordham did as
Julie Leong and
Estelle Wong upended Ava Todd and Sarah Stein at third doubles, 8-4, and then
Elliesa Ball and
Sarah Ali took first doubles from Jenna Brunner and Elaina Cummer, 8-4, to give the Rams the point.
In singles play, Leong took the first set at fourth singles from Stein, 7-5, and was leading 3-0 in the second when Stein was forced to retire as Fordham took a 2-0 lead. But Sexton knocked off Genkina in straight sets at sixth singles, and Feaster took first singles from Ball to knot that match at 2-2.
Ali got the Rams back on track with a 6-4, 7-5, win at second singles over Cummer and Wong clinched the match for Fordham with a win at the third position. Wong dropped the first set to Todd, 6-2, but came back to win the second, 7-5, and the third, 6-2.
