Box Score West Point, N.Y. (March 6, 2015) – The Fordham women's tennis squad traveled to West Point to face the Drexel University Dragons on Friday and the Rams came up just short, falling to the Dragons, 4-3.
The Rams opened play dropping the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches. Fordham's
Estelle Wong and
Julie Leong took second doubles from Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence, 8-6, but
Elliesa Ball and
Sarah Ali lost a tough-fought match to Nicole Pivonka and Clary Rodriguez Cruz at first singles, 8-7, dropping the tiebreaker which featured two match points for the Rams, 9-7. At third doubles, Annika Novacek and
Bella Genkina were upended by Drexel's Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch, 8-3.
The Rams picked up their three points in singles play as Ali bested Bowsher at second singles, taking the first set, 7-6 (1), before dropping the second, 6-3. But Ali came back to win the third set, 10-5.
Wong and Destiny Gronin won in straight sets at third and fifth singles, respectively, with Wong defeating Rodriguez Cruz, 6-2 and 6-2, and Grunin upending Providence, 6-1 and 6-1.
The Rams return to action on Monday, March 16 as they travel to Orlando, Florida, to face the Savannah School of Design at 1:00 p.m.
