Box Score Stony Brook, N.Y. (September 13, 2014) – The Fordham University women's tennis squad wrapped up play at the 2014 Stony Brook Invitational today with three players advancing to the semifinals and two more winning back draws.
After winning two matches yesterday,
Sarah Ali advanced to the A flight semifinals where she fell to Army's Carol Pitman today, 6-1 and 6-0.
Julie Leong advanced to the semifinals of the B flight today, winning her quarterfinal match with Allie Pavlansky of Navy, 6-1 and 6-4, before losing to Stony Brook's Nadia Smergut, 6-0 and 6-1.
In the D flight,
Anika Novacek won two matches yesterday to advance to the semifinals today where she fell to Amanda Keller of Bryant, 7-5 and 6-0.
In singles back draws, both
Destiny Grunin and
Bella Genkina won their respective flights. Grunin took the back draw in the C flight with three wins on the day. She started with an 8-4 win over Navy's Claudia Mackenzie and then upended Nikki Rohan of Marist, 8-1. In the finals of the C back draw, Grunin defeated Navy's Summer Ralston, 8-0.
In the D flight back draw, Genkina opened play today with an 8-2 win over Devlin-Ann Ammendoal of Bryant and then advanced to the back draw final with an 8-3 win over Molly Prins of Army. In the finals, Genkina defeated FDU's Alex Bryant, 8-0.
In doubles action, the team of Genkina and Novacek advanced to the semifinals of the B flight where they fell to Rosel Hernandezx and Kristine Rojo of Navy, 8-5.
Fordham will host an alumni event next Saturday, September 20, at 1:00 p.m. on the Hawthorn Rooney Courts before returning to action on September 26 as the Rams open play at the Eastern Championships at West Point, N.Y.
