Fordham's lone competitor at this weekend's NCAA East Regional waited a long time to get his opportunity, as senior
David Fajoyomi competed in the men's high jump event, the last of the field events held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
Â
With his performance on Saturday, Fajoyomi extended his collegiate career by two weeks, as he finished in the top 12 in the East Regional to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, held in Eugene, Oregon, June 11-14.
Â
The event began with 48 competitors at both the East and West Regional, where the top 12 at each site would get the invite to Eugene.
Â
After passing on the first height, Fajoyomi cleared 6' 8 ¾" on his first attempt, and followed that by clearing 6' 10 ¾" also on his first try.
Â
Then came the big jump for Fajoyomi, as the height was moved to 7' ¼". After missing on his first two attempts, Fajoyomi just snuck over the bar on his final attempt, marking the second time this season he has cleared 7' in an outdoor setting, which put him into the top 13.
Â
The senior would fall short on the next height, as Fajoyomi was unable to get over 7' 1 ½", and had to wait out Kennesaw State's Andre Dorsey's final jump. Dorsey was unable to make the new height, which meant Fajoyomi had missed less jumps than Dorsey (Fajoyomi's two to Dorsey's four) to clear 7' ¼", allowing Fajoyomi to tie for tenth overall and advance to the NCAA Championship.
Â
He finished tied with LIU-Brooklyn's Kemar Lewis and Coastal Carolina's Reggie Nelson to be the final entries from the East Regional.
Â
The other qualifiers from the East Regional included competitors from Alabama, Cornell, Penn, East Carolina, Auburn, Clemson, Lipscomb, and Saint Peter's.
Â
This is Fajoyomi's first trip to the NCAA Championship, having finished 16
th, 25
th, and 23
rd overall in the high jump at the previous three NCAA East Regional competitions. He is Fordham's first NCAA Championship representative since Barry Cantrell, who also competed in the high jump. He is also one of five athletes from the Atlantic 10 to move onto the NCAA Championship, joining La Salle's Alfredo Santana, Duquesne's Jim Spisak, and VCU's Kiara Porter and Jaleesa Williams.
The men's high jump event will take place on Friday, June 13
th, at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, beginning at 7:20 PM ET (3:20 PM local time).
