Freshman Shane McDonald tossed five innings and tied a career-high with five strikeouts, while Tim Swatek, Ian Edmiston, and Matthew Kozuch each drove in two runs, as the Rams topped the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 8-6, at Houlihan Park on Tuesday.

With the win, Fordham improved to 7-8 on the season, while Quinnipiac fell to 2-13.

Fordham kicked off the scoring right away in the first, scoring four times.  The Rams loaded the bases on a single and two hit batsmen and got a two-run single by Matthew Kozuch to take the early lead.  Later in the inning, Ian Edmiston delivered a two-run double down the left field line to increase the lead to 4-0.

After Quinnipiac got a run back in the third, Fordham increased its lead to 6-1 in the fourth.  The Rams had runners at second and third with two outs, when Tim Swatek laced a single to right center, scoring Ryan Phelan and Joseph Runco.

The Bobcats closed the gap to 6-3 by the sixth, when Fordham got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Matthew Cianci and Runco.

Quinnipiac picked up two runs in the seventh, once again cutting the deficit to 7-5, but Fordham replied back with a single run in the bottom of the frame.  Jason Lundy singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch and later stole third.  He later scored on a wild pitch to make it, 8-5.

The Bobcats picked up a run in the eighth, and gave the Rams a scare in the ninth, loading the bases with one out.  However, Fordham reliever Greg Weissert got the final two outs to record his fourth save of the season.

Freshman Shane McDonald (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win, as he tossed five-plus innings, allowing two earned runs and tying a season-high with five strikeouts.  Makay Redd threw 3.1 innings of relief, allowing three earned runs on six hits.

At the plate, Cianci was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Runco was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI.  Lundy also finished with a pair of hits to go with a stolen base.

The Fordham baseball team is back in action on Wednesday, March 19th, as the Rams travel to Hofstra for a 3:00 PM start.
