Women’s Tennis Competes at USCollege Invitational

Julie Leong advances to C singles final

The Fordham University women's tennis team competed at the 2014 USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center's Women's College Invitational last weekend at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing where Julie Leong advanced to the women's open C singles finals.
 
Leong opened play with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the round of 16 over Angelica Sidorenko from Charleston Southern and then she upended UTA's Verena Scott in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6. In the semifinals Leong defeated UConn's Summer Walker, 6-1, 6-3, to move into the finals where she fell to Harvard's Amy He, 6-2, 6-3.
 
In A singles, Elliesa Ball opened play with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to UConn's Srna Stosljevic before she defeated Carolina Zanotta from NJIT in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw, 6-2, 6-1, but was then eliminated by Anna Morozova of St. John's in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-3.
 
In B singles, Sarah Ali fell to Irina Preotescu of St. John's in the opening round, 6-3, 6-2, and then defeated Hofstra's Carmen Pestano, 6-1, 6-1, and was upended by Fairfield's Nicole Aragones, 6-1, 6-3, in the consolation rounds.
 
Bella Genkina also competed in C singles, defeating Hofstra's Bianca Derrick in the round of 16, 6-0, 6-3, before falling in the quarterfinals to Summer Walker of UConn, 6-1, 6-2. In the consolation round, Genkina fell to UTA's Verena Scott, 6-4, 7-5.
 
In other C singles action, Destiny Grunin opened play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over UConn's Shea Flanagan but fell in the quarterfinals to Amy He of Harvard, 6-0, 6-0. In the consolation round, Grunin defeated Isabella Wagener of LIU, 6-1, 6-1.
 
In D singles, Anika Novacek defeated Natalie Robson of UConn in the first round, 6-1, 6-3, and then fell to Harvard's Amanda Lin, 6-0, 6-0.
 
Carolina Sa also competed in the D singles for the Rams, defeating Hofstra's Bianca Posa in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-0, before falling to Ekaterina Tugarinova of UTA in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3, and Hofstra's  Giulia Leone in the consolation round, 0-6, 6-2, 10-0.
 
In doubles action, Estelle Wong and Leong fell in the round of 16 I the A flight to Anna Morozova and Zofia Stanisz from St. John's, 8-3, while Ali and Ball defeated CSU's Sophie Clobner and Yvonne Nubler in the first round of A doubles, 8-6. Ali and Ball were then bested by Harvard's Amy He and Monica Lin in the quarterfinals, 8-4.
 
Leong and Wang rebounded to win their first consolation match over Isabella Wagener and Sanne Louwers from LIU, 8-3, and were then eliminated by UTA's Verena Scott and Elizabeth Thomas, 8-7 (7-0).
 
Ali and Ball also won their first consolation match by default over Fanni Dudas and Anastasia Polyakova from St. John's.
 
In B doubles, Novacek and Genkina fell to Carolina Zanotta and Chloe Moxham of NJIT,  8-3, and Grunin and Sa were victorious over Nicole Chis and Ines Vujkovac, also from NJIT, 8-5. They then fell to Irina Preotescu and Stephanie Elgregren of St. John's, 8-0 in the next round.
 
Grunin and Sa won a consolation round match from UConn's Shea Flanagan and Summer Walker, 8-2.
