Women’s Tennis Competes at Eastern Championships

Destiny Grunin advances to back draw finals at third singles

The Fordham University women's tennis team competed at the 2014 Eastern Championships at West Point where Destiny Grunin advanced to the finals of the third single back draw and Bella Genkina advanced to the quarterfinals in fourth singles.
 
Grunin opened play by falling to Elizabeth Tsvetkov of Stony Brook, 6-4, 3-0 (inj.) but came back the next day to defeat Binghamton's Olga Ostrovestsky in the first round of the back draw, 8-7 (4). She then advanced to the quarterfinals where she upended Ariana Launie from Quinnipiac, 8-5, to move on to the semifinals where she defeated Ashanti Campbell of Bryant by default. Grunin then fell in the finals to UConn's Summer Walker, 8-2.
 
Genkina won her first round match at fourth singles over Quinnipiac's Nicole Kaklik, 6-0, 6-3, and the took down Ali Kaminetsky from Lehigh in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Genkina fell to Stony Brook's Becky Shtilkind, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5.
 
At first singles, Sarah Ali and Elliesa Ball competed for Fordham with Ali advancing to the semifinals of the back draw.  Ali opened play with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Stony Brook's Kristina Vozniak. She moved into the back draw were she won by default of Jackie Raynor of Quinnipiac and then moved into the quarterfinals where she defeated Marist's Claire Schmitz, 8-3. Ali's run ended with an 8-5 loss to Arielle Griffin of UMass in the semifinals.
 
Ball fell to UMass' Aarzoo Malik in the first round of first singles, 6-4, 6-0, and then dropped an 8-1 decision to Annie DiMuno from Binghamton in the first round of the back draw.
 
In second singles, Fordham's Julie Leong fell to UConn's Maxie Weinberg in the first round, 6-1, 6-0. In the back draw, she defeated Mariam Skhirtladze from St. Bonaventure in the first round before falling to Binghamton's Shea Brodsky in the quarterfinals.
 
In third singles, Anika Novacek fell in the first round to Bryant's Nina Luiggi, 6-2, 7-5, and then dropped an 8-3 decision to Anna Guryanova from Seton Hall, 8-3.
 
In fourth singles, Carolina Sa fell to Army's Julian Mok in the first round, 6-1, 6-3, but came back to win the first round of the by default and then defeated Francesca Chin of St. Bonaventure in the quarterfinals, 8-4, before falling to Abby Duddy from Lehigh, 8-4, in the semifinals.
 
In doubles action, Leong and Estella Wong teamed up at first doubles, defeating LIU's Marine Dans and Nancy Zonnevald, 8-5, and then bested Army's Eva Sung and Gabriella Spindler, 8-5, in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the duo fell to top-seeded Komal Safder and Valeria Salazar, 8-1.
 
Ali and Ball also played at first doubles, falling to Albany's Dajana Ognjenovic and Kirsten Scott, 8-5.
 
In second doubles, Genkina and Novacek took a first round match from Bryant's Stefanie Arroyo and Nina Luiggi, 8-6, before falling to Annie DiMuno and Paulina Tafler, 8-3, in the round of 16.
 
Grunin and Sa also competed at second doubles, falling to Ariana Launie and Sitila Rencheli, 8-0, in the first round.
 
The Rams will return to action on Friday, October 3, as they begin play at the Collegiate Invitational at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
