New York, N.Y. - (January 10, 2014) - For the first time in over a month, the Fordham track & field team was back in action on Friday night, taking part in the 2014 NYC Gotham Cup, hosted by NYU at the Armory Track & Field Center.  The Rams put together a good first showing in the new year with seven finishes in the top five.

In the women's competition, Fordham was led by two of the Rams' top seniors, Titi Fagade and Anisa Arsenault.  Arsenault opened the Gotham Cup by placing second overall in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:52.32, while later in the competition Fagade was the top collegiate finisher in the 500 meter run with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:15.10.

The Rams also got solid contributions from the junior duo of Mara Lieberman and Kristen Stuart.  Lieberman placed third overall in the mile run in 5:12.27 with Stuart taking ninth place in the 500 meter run in 1:17.95.

Other top individual performances came from senior Averie Sheppard, who took seventh in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles in 9.49 seconds, senior Christina Vivinetto, who was ninth in the mile run in 5:22.51, junior Melissa Higgins, who placed eighth in the 1,000 meters in 3:07.75, and freshman Shanna Heaney, who finished eighth in the 800 meter run in 2:24.43.

The Fordham women also had a successful night in the relay events, winning the 4x800 relay in 9:40.22, taking second in the 4x400 relay in 3:53.71, and sixth in the distance medley relay in 13:23.80.

On the men's side, junior thrower Austin Ruiz had a strong start to 2014, taking home a pair of top ten finishes.  He was second in the shot put with a mark of 48' 10 ¾", while placing seventh in the weight throw in 41' 10 ½".

Besides Ruiz, Fordham put together solid efforts in both the mile run and the 800 meter run.  In the mile, the Rams had three runners finish in the top ten, led by junior Jonathan Annelli in eighth place in 4:18.64.  He was quickly followed in by sophomore Mike Turi in ninth (4:19.01) and senior Brian Walter in tenth (4:21.16).

Over in the 800 meters, it was senior Kyle Clonan and junior Daniel Green both finishing in the top ten.  Clonan was seventh overall in 2:00.78, while Green was ninth in 2:01.26.

Similar to the women, the Fordham men also performed well in the relay events, placing second in the 4x800 relay in 8:02.76 and fourth in the distance medley relay in 10:31.94.

The Rams will have little time to rest, as the team is right back in action on Saturday, January 11th at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Connecticut.
