New York, N.Y. - (Feb. 4, 2012) - Members of the Fordham University men's indoor track and field squad competed at the 2012 New Balance Collegiate Invitational at The Armory on Saturday with Julian Saad pacing the squad with a school-record showing in the 3000m.
Saad placed eighth in the 3000m competition in a time of 8:13.88, breaking Pat Lavery's previous school record time of 8:18 set in 1989 and qualifying for the IC4A Championship. Villanova's Mathew Mildenhall won the event in a time of 8:06.23, followed by MacLean O'Donnell of Texas A&M (8:07.95), BYU's Tylor Thatcher (8:09.28), Morgan Pearson of Duke (8:09.71), Columbia Nico Composto (8:09.80), Kansas' Greg Bussing (8:11.84), North Carolina's Isaac Presson (8:13.79) and Saad.
In the 800m, the Rams had two top-six finishers with Kevin Fitzgerald placing fourth in a season-best and career-best time of 1:51.12 and John Cosgrove taking sixth in career-best a time of 1:51.66. Fitzgerald's time also qualifies him for the IC4A Championship while Cosgrove improved on his previous IC4A qualifying time.
Dublin's Mark English won the 800m in a time of 1:49.49 followed by Seton Hall's Josh Wilks (1:49.93), Texas A&M's Oscar Ramirez (1:50.27), Fitzgerald, Clemson's Chris Slate (1:51.38) and Cosgrove.
The other event for Fordham was the distance medley relay where the team of Sean Atkinson, Cosgrove, Sam Houston and Fitzgerald took seventh in a season-best time of 9:53.41. Texas A&M won the event in a time of 9:29.71, followed by Oklahoma (9:30.13), Southern Connecticut State (9:48.22), Iona (9:48.78), Texas-San Antonio (9:49.90), Columbia (9:50.87), Fordham, Kansas (9:57.89), Iowa State (9:58.54) and Duke (9:58.80).
