Fairfield, Conn./Williamstown, Mass. - (Sept. 25, 2011) - The Fordham cross country teams split up their squad on Saturday, competing at both the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams College, and the Leeber Invitational, held at Fairfield University. Highlighting the day, the Fordham men finished second in both competitions with junior Julian Saad winning the Purple Valley Classic.
At Williams, the Fordham men finished only 16 points behind first place finisher Williams with a score of 58. Saad paced the entire field over the 8K distance with a time of 26:13.27, while teammate Kevin Fitzgerald was right behind him in third place in 26:33.35. Brian Riley (27:02.41) and Sam Stuart (27:03.15) also finished in the top 15 in 13th and 15th place, respectively. Other scorers for Fordham included Kevin Harvey (26th - 27:23.95), Nick Synan (32nd - 27:30.04), and Brian Walter (44th - 27:48.77).
In the women's 6K race, the Rams were eighth out of 16 teams. The Rams top finisher was Anisa Arsenault, who took 11th overall in a time of 22:50. Mairin O'Connor was the Rams' next finisher in 39th (23:56), followed by Emily Osman (48th - 24:05), Sarah Glockenmeier (55th - 24:20), Danielle Drummond (66th - 24:46), Ashley Davis (97th - 25:37), and Nako Nakatsuka (110th - 25:55).
At Fairfield, the Fordham men were second out of nine schools, trailing only host Fairfield. The Rams scored 69 points, led by Ryan Polo (27:08) and Michael Belgiovine (27:20), who placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Matt Collins took 15th overall (27:43), followed by Andrew Roddin in 17th (27:45), Rich Grandelli in 23rd (28:04), Thomas Kelly in 25th (28:10), and Tim Kazanjian in 26th (28:11).
In the women's competition, Fordham placed fourth out of nine teams with 134 points, behind Sacred Heart, St. John's and Fairfield. Kim Naples led the charge for Fordham, placing 14th overall in 20:07.01, followed by Mara Lieberman in 28th (20:27.69). Christina Machado was the next Ram over the line in 33rd (20:30.57) with Christina Vivinetto (37th - 20:39.64), Jillian Brooks (40th - 20:54.88), Kerry Sorenson (60th - 22:06.79), and Siobhan Cooney (61st - 22:11.75) also scoring for Fordham.
The Fordham cross country teams will next be in action on Friday, October 7th, when the Rams compete at the 2011 Metropolitan Championships, held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
