Bronx, N.Y. - (Sept. 10, 2011) - It was perhaps the largest cross country meet ever hosted by Fordham University with over 30 schools appearing at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday. And to make things even more special, the Rams had a special pre-race ceremony to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11th that featured Representative Peter King, a high school friend of Fordham head coach Tom Dewey.
The festivities began with the National Anthem and the presentation of colors by the Fordham ROTC under the direction of Cadet Alex Deardorf. Following the anthem, Sister Regina De Vitto, CND, a member of Fordham's Campus Ministry, made the invocation before King delivered his remarks and started the first race of the day. King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee who represents New York's 3rd congressional district, is a high school friend of Dewey.
All runners wore a special 9/11 commemorative ribbon produced by members of the Fordham team.
With so many teams competing both the men's and women's competition was sorted into two races with the Division I schools (along with NYU and the College of New Jersey) running in one race and the Division II and III schools running in another race.
The Fordham men tied with NYU for fifth in the men's Division I race, of 16 teams, while the Fordham women placed seventh, of 17 teams, in the women's Division I race.
In the men's Division I race, Princeton won the team title with 26 points, placing four of the top six runners in the event, with Navy talking second with 41 points and Yale third with 88 points. Fordham and NYU tied for fifth with 155 points while Rider was seventh (206), New Jersey Tech eight (264), Rutgers ninth (273) and Quinnipiac tenth (286).
Individually, Princeton's Donn Cabrel won the five-mile race in a time of 25:30.37 followed by teammate Eddie Owens, who placed second in 25:42.43). Navy's Cody Rome took third (25:44.00) with Fordham sophomore Julian Saad placing fourth (25:45.21) and Princeton's Brian Leung fifth (25:53.08).
Following Saad across the finish line for the Rams was freshman Jonathan Annelli, who placed 41st in a time of 26:54.72 followed closely by senior Brian Riley, who was 44th in a time of 26:57.11. Also scoring for Fordham were junior Nick Synan, who was 55th in 27:14.55, and sophomore Brian Walter, who placed 59th in 27:21.56.
Other runners for the Fordham men included sophomore Kevin Harvey (64th - 27:31.26), sophomore Michael Belgiovine (69th - 27:43.38), senior Andrew Roddin (74th - 27:50.57), senior Matt Collins (86th - 28:01.41), senior Kevin Fitzgerald (95th - 28:24.66), sophomore Tim Kazanjian (98th - 28:28.57), senior Rich Grandelli (111th - 28:49.09), junior Ben Delikat (132nd - 29:17.66), sophomore Patrick Burke (144th - 29:36.90), senior Christopher Chung (151st - 29:42.31), sophomore Joe Hartnett (196th - 31:22.40) and senior Devin Kelly (200th - 31:46.51).
In the women's Division I race, Princeton also took home the team title with 34 points, placing four runners in the top eight, followed by Yale (43), Penn (96), Rutgers (147) and Sacred Heart (164). Rounding out the top ten among the 17 school competing were Quinnipiac at (sixth - 173), Fordham (seventh - 224), NYU (eighth - 231), Delaware (ninth - 239) and Rider (tenth - 242).
Yale's Millie Chapman won the 5K race in a time of 18:03.63 followed by former Fordham runner Melissa Salerno who was running with the New balance Club, placing second in 18:05.87. Jacque Sahlberg of Yale was third overall in 18:10.52 with Penn's Leslie Kovach placing fourth (18:17.12) and Clare Gallagher, the first Princeton finisher, placing fifth (18:23.83).
For Fordham, sophomore Anisa Arsenault was the first Ram across the line, placing 30th overall in a time of 19:16.62. Freshman Emily Osman was the second Ram to finish, taking 45th overall in a time of 19:36.95, followed by freshman Sarah Glockenmeier, who was 58th in 19:55.87 with senior Mairin O'Connor, who placed 59th in 19:56.47, right behind her. Also scoring for Fordham was junior Ashley Davis, who placed 69th in 20:06.39.
Other competitors for the Fordham women included junior Kim Naples (89th - 20:23.23), senior Nako Nakatsuka (109th - 20:56.81), junior Christina Machado (116th - 21:07.47), freshman Danielle Drummond (154th - 22:09.46), sophomore Kerry Sorenson (156th - 22:10.74), sophomore Christina Vivinetto (162nd - 22:17.97), sophomore Shannon McKenna (169th - 22:37.31), senior Fallon France (170th - 22:37.86), junior Olivia Hustleby (181st - 23:07.15), senior Siobhan Cooney (197th - 24:09.85) and sophomore Amanda Foggia (205th - 25:26.49).
The men's and women's cross country teams will next be in action next Saturday, September 17th as they compete at the C.W. Post Invitational in Brookville, N.Y. at 10:30 a.m.
