Fordham Men's Cross Country Wins St. John's Fall Festival Team Title

Bronx, N.Y. - (Oct. 20, 2008) - Led by a first place finish from freshman Brian Riley, the Fordham University men's cross country squad captured it sixth consecutive St. John's Fall Festival team title at Cunningham Park in Queens on Sunday.

The Fordham men won the team competition with a score of 20, followed by Southern Connecticut State (50), Hofstra (73) and Fairleigh Dickinson (99).

On the women's side, Fordham placed second with 34 points, 13 points behind St. John's, while Hofstra took third (89), Southern Connecticut fourth (112) and Fairleigh Dickinson fifth (139).

Riley paced the men, being the first Division I runner across the line (third overall), covering the 5K course in a time of 16:37.11 while teammate Paul Szczepaniak was right behind him, finishing second among Division I runners (fourth overall) in 16:38.09.

Also scoring for the Rams were Tom Papain who placed fourth among Division I runners and sixth overall), Thomas Kelly, who was sixth among Division I runners and eighth overall (16:51.89) and Casey Barrett, who placed seventh among Division I runners and ninth overall (16:53.57).

Also competing for the men were Kevin Fitzgerald (eighth among Div. I/10th overall), Sam Stuart (11th/14th), Brian Horowitz (12th/15th), Erik Lawrence (13th/17th) and Andrew Roddin (14th/20th).

Brigid Moriarty was the top Fordham finisher on the distaff side, taking third among Division I competitors and fourth overall in a time of 14:26.84 on the 4K course. Kerri Gallagher was right behind Moriarty, placing third among Division I runners and fifth overall in a time of 14:27.41.

Also scoring for the Fordham women were Jacqueline Prevete, who took eighth among Division I runners and ninth overall (15:01.22), Mairin O'Connor, who placed ninth among Division I runners and tenth overall, and Susanne Hansen, who was tenth among Division I runners and 12th overall (15:09.84).

Also competing for the women were Kathleen Reilly (11th/13th), Nako Nakatsuka (12th/14th), Siobhan Cooney (16th/19th), Jana Trenk (19th/24th) and Mary LeSage (20th/25th).

The Fordham cross country squad will next be in action on Saturday, November 1st as they compete in the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships in Charlotte, N.C.
