Bronx, N.Y. – (September 6, 2023) – The Fordham women's soccer team is in action twice this week and will be in a "New York State of Mind", as the Rams host Columbia on Thursday night at Moglia Stadium, while heading up the "Hudson River Line" on Sunday to meet UAlbany.
The Rams (2-2-1) hope to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Fairfield this past Sunday.
Cambrie Arboreen scored Fordham's lone goal against the Stags, while
Serena Mensah recorded four saves in relief of
Kyla King, who was red carded in the first half.
Fordham begins the week against crosstown opponent Columbia, who sits at 2-1-1 on the year. Last week, the Lions headed to California, falling to #8 Santa Clara, 1-0, while playing to a scoreless draw at San Francisco. Nata Ramirez and Maia Tablon each have a goal and two assists to lead the offense, while Paige Nurkin has started all four games in net, posting a 0.29 goals against average and 13 saves.
On Sunday, the Rams hit the road for a tilt at UAlbany. It will be Fordham's first trip to the capital city to meet the Great Danes, who are 2-3 on the year. UAlbany will have the Atlantic 10 on their mind, as the team also plays Massachusetts this week. The Great Danes have had seven different players score a goal this season with goalkeeper Megan Hart making 23 saves over four games.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 21
st all-time meeting between Fordham and Columbia with the Lions holding the edge in the series, 13-7. Columbia got the better of Fordham last season with a 4-0 victory at Commisso Soccer Stadium. The Rams' last win over the Lions came in 2017, a 2-0 win at Fordham.
For Fordham and UAlbany, it will only be the second-ever meeting between the two schools. The other prior meeting came in 2000, when the Rams posted a 2-0 home win over the Great Danes on Edwards Parade.
LAST TIME OUT (9/3): Some days the ball bounces your way and other days it does not. Sunday was a bad bounce day for the Fordham women's soccer team, as the Rams fell to Fairfield by a 3-1 score at Moglia Stadium at Jack Coffey Field.
The course of the match immediately changed in the 33
rd minute, as Fordham goalkeeper
Kyla King was red carded for being outside the box and grabbing the ball with her hands as the Rams' final defender on a scoring chance. This put Fordham down a player for the remainder of the match. On the ensuing free kick, Fairfield's Dana Nadda scored on a shot from 19 yards for her first goal of the season.
The score remained that way until the 52
nd minute when the Stags doubled their lead. Maddy Theriault stole the ball from Fordham goalkeeper
Serena Mensah in the box and tucked the ball into an open net for a 2-0 advantage. It was her second goal of the season. Fairfield made it a 3-0 score in the 77
th minute, when Reagan Klarmann found Alex Darcy with a through ball. Darcy then chipped a shot past Mensah for her first tally of the year.
Fordham was able to crack the scoreboard in the 84
th minute for the 3-1 final score. Mensah put a long punt forward that
Carmen Hardwick flicked forward with her head to
Cambrie Arboreen. Arboreen then quickly put the ball past Fairfield keeper Katie Wright for her first goal of the season. Mensah made four saves in relief of King, while Wright had three stops in the victory.
WELCOME TO THE ASSIST CLUB: During the Rams' match against Fairfield, Fordham goalkeeper
Serena Mensah recorded an assist on the Rams' goal scored by
Cambrie Arboreen. Mensah added her name to a very exclusive list of Fordham goalkeepers to have an assist, becoming the fifth to do so. Shannon Misiaszek (2001 & 2003) and Kelly LaMorte (2018 & 2019) each had two assists in their Fordham careers to lead the group, while Jen Byer (2007) and
Maria O'Sullivan (2020-21) have one each.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: Fordham's home opening win on August 20
th saw plenty of firsts other than the match being the first win of the year. The win for the Rams was their first home opening win since 2016, while the four-goal performance had not happened since September 2018 against Davidson. Freshmen
Riley Carroll (goal & assist) and
Sari Frankl (two assists), as well as graduate student
Cianna Elmazaj (goal), each found the scoresheet for the first time as a Ram, while
Caroline Monahan recorded her first multi-goal game as a Ram. It was the first two-goal game by a Fordham player since
Kristen Cocozza had two against Rhode Island in the 2020-21 spring season.
Fordham had more firsts in their most recent win over Stonehill, as
Kaitlyn Murphy and Lena Johnson each recorded their first collegiate goal in a 2-0 victory.
