Swimming & Diving Opens Competition at 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay Takes Bronze in School Record Time

Geneva, Ohio – (February 16, 2022) – The Fordham swimming & diving team returned to the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Wednesday to open competition at the 2022 Atlantic Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving 10 Championship.
 
A total of five events were held on day one, three on the women's side and two for the men.
 
In the women's team competition, George Washington in the leader with 104 points with Davidson in second at 79.  However, only eight points separate second place from sixth place.  Richmond is third at 78 points, followed by Duquesne (77), Massachusetts (72), and Fordham (71).  St. Bonaventure and La Salle are tied for seventh with 62 points with Saint Louis (38), Rhode Island (30), and George Mason (30) rounding out the field.
 
The first event of the night was the 200 medley relay, where Fordham's team of Leire Martin, Becky Kamau, Kiara Norris, and Madeline Bergin took fourth overall in a season-best time of 1:41.33.
 
Next up was the finals of the women's one-meter dive, where the Rams had three competitors.  Natalie Ortof made the championship final with a preliminary score of 252.40, while Cai Flowers made the consolation final with a score of 210.65.  Molly Farrell ended the preliminary competitors in 20th with a score of 199.50.

Flowers ended up 13th overall in the one-meter dive after posting a finals score of 204.00, while Ortof took eighth in the championship final with a mark of 220.10.
 
Night one for the women concluded with the 800 freestyle relay, where Victoria Navarro, Ainhoa Martin, Alison Lin, and Clare Culver took sixth with a season-best time of 7:24.93.
 
Over on the men's side, George Washington won both the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay to post a score of 80 points, followed by St. Bonaventure (64), Davidson (60), Massachusetts (56), Fordham (54), Saint Louis (52), La Salle (50), and George Mason (34).
 
In the 200 medley relay, the Rams were eighth overall, as Spencer Clarke, Nathan Nguyen, Vitalis Onu, Nicholas Chao posted a season-best time of 1:31.46.
 
The highlight of the night came in the final event, as Fordham's 800 freestyle relay team of Clarke, Alex Wilhelm, Onu, and Daniel Langlois took bronze in a school record time of 6:38.70, breaking the old mark of 6:40.14 in 2017.
 
Day two of the championship begins on Thursday at 10:00 AM with preliminary races, followed by the finals at 6:00 PM.
