Fordham Sports Analytics Society Update

Rams taking advantage of unique partnership

Sports Business Initiative Launched at Gabelli School of Business (Fordham News - April 11, 2021)

Bronx, N.Y. - Last August Fordham Athletics announced our partnership with the Fordham Sports Analytics Society. This partnership allowed Fordham University to become one of a few universities with access to a full-fledged student-run research team for varsity sports. Since August, the Fordham Sports Analytics Society (FSAS) has had the opportunity to work closely with our football, basketball, baseball, and soccer teams.

The FSAS has worked closely with the coaches of these teams to aid in the collection, manipulation, and presentation of sports data. The goal of their work is to deliver insights through data and analytics.

The FSAS Soccer Research Team is led by Luke Corrado '22 and comprised of six other students. This team has been working with the Fordham Women's Soccer coaches to create scouting reports for each game by analyzing their opponents' play style, strengths, and weaknesses. This allows the team to better utilize its' own tactics and train more effectively before games. The research team is also exploring how new statistics and technology can improve the program's player development and scouting efforts.

The FSAS Football Research Team is led by Chris Orlando '24 and has begun utilizing a combination of the program's film editing software and proprietary data to create reports. These reports will allow the coaching staff to better evaluate the team's performance and scout new talent. The Football Research Team is still looking for additional members. Interested students can learn more and sign up online.

As for the upcoming seasons, the FSAS Basketball Research Team is lead by Niko Konstantellis '21. This team will create scouting and research reports for coaches, as well as perform on-court duties once the season begins. Looking ahead to the spring, the FSAS Baseball Research Team is led by Connor Dwyer '23. This team will continue to track in-game analytics, scout opposition through proprietary software, and drive the player development component of the program by utilizing the newly installed Trackman system, Rapsodo, and BlastMotion.

"The Fordham Sports Analytics Society is helping our department, coaches, and student-athletes make strides and enhancements in new and innovative ways," said Ed Kull, Director of Athletics. "I couldn't be more thrilled with their performance and am looking forward to expanding their efforts to other programs."
