Softball Sweeps Manhattan to Start 21-Game Win Streak; Cooney Strikes Out 18 in 14-Inning Game Against Columbia

With the 2020 spring sports season canceled by the COVID-19 outbreak, we at Fordham have decided to dig back through our archives and provide our fans with content on some of the outstanding teams and student-athletes who have graced Rose Hill over the years

April 6, 2010 – There were plenty of highlights during the 2010 Fordham Softball season, both individual and team.  One of the most impressive marks set in the year began with a doubleheader sweep of Manhattan at Bahoshy Field.  The wins were the beginning of a school record 21-game win streak for the Rams.

In game one, Fordham shut out the Jaspers by a 7-0 score, behind a masterful performance by pitcher Chelsea Plimpton.  Plimpton tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out 11 Manhattan hitters.

Offensively, the big blow came in the top of the fourth inning with Fordham up 3-0.  Erin Fisher connected on a grand slam home run to cap the scoring and finished with five RBI in the game.

Game two saw Fordham complete the sweep with a 7-3 decision.  The Rams used the long ball to score the majority of the runs, as Jocelyn Dearborn had a three-run home run in the second inning, while Kat VanBenschoten had a two-run home run off the bench in the fifth inning.

The win streak would last through May 14th, as Fordham finished with an amazing 47-10 regular season record, earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Championship.

Bob Cooney
April 6, 1927 – In one of the all-time great single game performances, Fordham pitcher Bob Cooney tossed all 14 innings of a 2-1 win over the Columbia Lions at Fordham Field.

Cooney finished with an amazing 18 strikeouts in the game, which ranks as the second-highest total in Fordham baseball history.  Only a 19-strikeout game by Tim McNamara in a 13-inning game in 1922 saw more by a single pitcher.

Cooney would finish the 1927 season with one of the best single years in Ram history.  He posted a school record ERA of 0.85 and a 7-3 win-loss record over 84.2 innings of work with 68 strikeouts.  Cooney now holds a spot in the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame.
