Softball Splits Battle of the Bronx Doubleheader

The Rams won game two 5-2 after falling 3-0 in game one

Bronx, N.Y. - Using a strong start to game two Wednesday afternoon, Fordham University Softball defeated Manhattan 5-2 to split the Battle of the Bronx at Bahoshy Field, with the Jaspers taking game one, 3-0.

GAME ONE | MANHATTAN 3, FORDHAM 0

Senior Holly Beeman got the ball to start for Fordham (16-20, 7-8) and took the loss, despite four scoreless innings out of the gate. Sophomore Vicki Klimaszewski was a bright spot for the Rams, tossing the back end of the ballgame, throwing 2.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

In the batter's box, the Rams were paced by junior Mikayla Swan, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a walk.

HOW GAME ONE HAPPENED

A pitchers' duel in the early going, the game was scoreless through four with just a handful of hits for either side, before Manhattan rallied for all three runs of the game in the top of the fifth. Fordham managed one chance with a runner on third in the sixth, when Swan made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out.

GAME TWO | FORDHAM 5, MANHATTAN 2

Junior Olivia Simcoe started in the circle and picked up the win for Fordham, as the right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out five. Freshman Sydney May also made an impact in the circle for the Rams, throwing a scoreless seventh inning while allowing no hits and no walks while recording one strikeout, to earn her third save of the year.

HOW GAME TWO HAPPENED

The Rams got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Fordham scored twice, with one run coming across on senior Kate McGuire's single to take an early lead.

The Jaspers failed to push any runs across before the Rams built on their lead in the third inning as Fordham scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior Eva Koratsis, to make it 3-0 Rams.

Fordham held Manhattan without a run before expanding their lead to 5-0 the following inning. The Rams notched two runs, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of McGuire. Manhattan put two runs on the board before the game was over, but Fordham still held on for the 5-2 win.

GAME TWO NOTES

» Senior Neleh Nogay picked up three base hits in the game for Fordham.
» Simcoe struck out five Jaspers hitters.
» Fordham took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Rams out-hit the Jaspers at a 9-7 clip.
