Newport News, Va. – Although technically not back-to-back since the Fordham softball team didn't play the weekend prior,
Madie Aughinbaugh and
Devon Miller have now earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors for a second straight Monday after they've competed over the weekend. Miller was named Rookie of the Week, while Aughinbaugh garnered her first Player of the Week award of the year and second of her career. The Rams went 3-2 at the Duke Invitational and improved to 7-13 overall.
"Aughie continues to swing a good bat and credit to her teammates getting on base before her as she came up big with some timely RBI hits for us this weekend." Head coach
Melissa Inouye said, "She's an all-around player for us as she contributes in so many ways to our team success. Devon ended the weekend on a high note as she was in a good rhythm and in sync with Amanda [Carey's] pitch calling. It was nice to see her get a lot of swings and misses."
Aughinbaugh made two starts in the circle on the weekend, finishing with a 1-1 record, a 4.45 ERA, and 10 strikeouts over 11.0 frames, going the distance in each contest, first against the hosts, Duke, and then against Lafayette in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. She fell one strikeout short of her season-high in the latter contest, striking out eight Cougars over five frames. She walked just two batters.
At the plate, the senior reached base safely in all five games, recorded at least one hit in four, and enjoyed three multi-hit efforts. In the opener against Kent State, she got the scoring started with a RBI single in the first inning, came around to score, and singled again in the second then stole second, the 30
th stolen base of her career, now two away from joining the program's top-10. Against the Blue Devils, she drew a walk in three plate appearances. Against Howard on Saturday, she drove in a career-high five teammates while going 3-for-5 with a run scored. She again started the scoring off, this time with a three-run home run down the left field line in the first inning and later driving in two with a two-out RBI single in the seventh. She didn't slow down on Friday, going 2-for-4 with four more RBIs, then went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, one RBI, and a run scored. For the weekend, she slashed .471/.550/.706 with a team-high 11 RBIs.
In addition to nearing the all-time stolen bases top-10, Aughinbaugh surpassed Michele Daubman for fourth all-time with her 116
th appearance. One more start and she'll be tied with Daubman for fourth also.
Miller made three appearances for the Rams this weekend, two starts, and put together a 2-1 record and 3.50 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 12.0 frames with not a single walk. Against Kent State in the opener, Miller struggled a bit, allowing six runs, four earned, over 2.2 frames with five strikeouts, taking the loss, but bounced back with a win in relief against Howard, allowing just two runs over 4.1 innings with four punchouts. She was masterful on Sunday, carving up Lafayette with just two hits allowed over five innings and a season-high 11 strikeouts.
Miller is now up to a 4-3 record and 4.01 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 43.2 innings. That strikeout tally currently leads the Atlantic 10 by one – ahead of Aughinbaugh. Miller's 8.0 K/7 ranks 93
rd in the country, as well.
Fordham returns to action this weekend with the Charleston Cougar Classic and will alternate playing the hosts and UNC Greensboro over three days.
