Geneva, Ohio – (February 20, 2020) – Day two of the Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship has concluded at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, and it was a big moving day for the Fordham women, who moved from seventh to third place in the team standings.
George Washington continues to lead the Championship with 251 points, followed by Duquesne (199), Fordham (194), Davidson (172), Richmond (156), Massachusetts (117), St. Bonaventure (98), George Mason (79), La Salle (67), Saint Louis (62), and Rhode Island (41).
A total of four events were held on the second day of action, with Fordham grabbing gold in two.
The night began with the finals of the 500 freestyle event, where Fordham had four swimmers score.
Clare Culver and
Paulina Watson tied for fifth in the "A" final in a time of 4:54.98, while
Bayley Frierson (4:58.01) and
Kate Magill (4:58.20) were 15
th and 16
th in the "B" final.
Next was the 200 individual medley, where
Vaula Vekkeli scored 11
th in the "B" final in a season-best time of 2:02.12.
The Rams then started their big move in the 50 freestyle, where five Rams qualified for the finals, led by
Michelle Martin, who broke the school record in the preliminaries with an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 22.67 seconds. Martin qualified first with her time and then won gold in the "A" final, placing first in 22.95 seconds.
Theresa Mullen joined Martin on the podium as she grabbed bronze with a third place finish in 23.28 seconds, while
Hannah McGee tied for fifth in 23.44. In the "B" final,
Kiara Norris grabbed 11
th overall in 23.60 seconds with
Samantha McDonald in 16
th at 23.85.
The last event of day two was the 200 freestyle relay, where Fordham captured its second gold of the night. The Rams' team of Martin, McGee,
Amelia Bullock, and Mullen placed first in an Atlantic 10 and school record time of 1:30.84, besting the previous mark of 1:32.04, set in 2018.
The Championship continues on Friday with day three of action, beginning at 10:00 AM.
