Bronx, N.Y. – Director of Athletics
David Roach has announced that Fordham volleyball head coach
Ian Choi has been given a three-year extension on his contract, which will take him through the 2023 season. Choi has been with the Rams for three years and has served as head coach for the past two seasons.
"I am happy to announce an extension for Coach Choi as he continues to build and develop the Fordham volleyball program," Roach said, "The individual growth and accolades under his watch serve as an example of his strong leadership qualities and impending success in the Atlantic 10."
"I'd like to thank Director of Athletics Dave Roach and Senior Woman Administrator
Djenane Paul for this opportunity and the trust to continue to build the program here at Fordham." Choi said, "I sincerely believe that Fordham in its own right is capable of sustaining a nationally competitive volleyball program. It's a tremendous privilege to work alongside our student-athletes, staff, and administration to propel Fordham volleyball and actualize the potential of this team and program."
Choi joined the Fordham volleyball program in 2017 as an assistant coach under
Gini Ullery-Shrift. He was promoted to head coach in the offseason and has a 22-31 overall record. This past year, the Rams recorded five Atlantic 10 wins, the most by the program since 2012 and 12 overall wins, tied for the most since that same season. His squad finished last year's campaign on a three-match win streak, narrowly missing out on the school's first postseason berth since 2010 due to a tiebreaker. 2012 was also the last time the program had won three straight in league play.
This past season, senior
Morgan Williams became the program's first-ever Atlantic 10 Libero of the Year, obliterating all previous single-season and career records and holding or sharing all single-match records, as well. Freshmen
Megan Brzozowski and
Aria De La Rosa were named to the All-Rookie team, just the second time two student-athletes made the year-end squad, the other instance coming in 2007.
In the past two years, the Rams have set or matched eight school single-match records, six individual and two team. Extending that to his first year in the Bronx as an assistant, that number rises to 12.
