Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University men's tennis team held their end-of-year team banquet on Monday evening where they handed out team awards and celebrated the season.
The team finished with a 17-6 overall record, the fourth winning season in a year and tying for the most wins in a single season in Fordham history. "This was a tremendous year for the guys and it was a pleasure to spend time with them to celebrate the season. We got to recognize the winners of our team awards and celebrate the accomplishments of the team both on and off the court," said head coach Michael Sowter.
The Spirit Award, which is given to the student-athlete that demonstrates sportsmanship, leadership, motivation and integrity, was awarded to junior
Fabian Hansch Mauritzson for a second straight year. The team's co-captain, Fabian moved up to the #1 position in the lineup and continued to battle all season with a positive tone and tireless work ethic. He compiled 10 victories in both singles and doubles and was the lone victor against University of Richmond at the A10 Championships.
Freshman
Jofre Segarra received the team's Most Improved Player Award. Segarra struggled early indoors at the beginning of the spring but continued to work hard and improve to secure a position in the starting lineup. He finished with seven singles wins on the season and was victorious in the team's win over Saint Louis at the A10 Championships.
The Player of the Year Award was presented to sophomore
Alex Makatsaria. Alex played predominantly at the #5 slot and went 16-3 on the year, the best singles record on the team. He also worked his way into the doubles lineup in March, going 6-3 with
Lutwin de Macar.
Additionally,
Max Green was named the men's tennis team MVP at the Block F Dinner for a second time.
