BRONX, N.Y. – Finding themselves down 3-2 with two matches left, there was no margin of error for the Fordham men's tennis team today. And the Rams responded winning both remaining matches, the final in a tiebreaker, to pull out a 4-3 win over Fairfield University on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts.
The Stags opened the match taking the doubles point, winning both completed doubles matches.
In singles play, Fordham took first and fourth singles while Fairfield won at third and sixth singles to take a 3-2 lead.
Mateusz Gradzki took first singles for the Rams from Diego Acala in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while
Dhananjay Athreya dropped the first set to Domagoj Stabek, 6-3, but came back to win the second, 6-3, and the third, 6-1.
The match came down to second and fifth singles.
Diego Cueto battled back after losing the first set at fifth singles to Luca Benaibbouche, 6-4, to win the second, 6-1, and the third, 7-5, to even the match at 3-3.
All eyes then turned to second singles where
Will Lokier dropped the first set to Kostas Kollias, 6-3, before coming back to win the second, 6-3, and then took the third set to a tiebreaker which he won 7-6(5) to win the match for Fordham.
