Squash Rebounds With Pair of Wins on Saturday

Rams Topple Washington University in St. Louis, 6-3, and Swarthmore, 7-1

Washington Univ. in St. Louis Box Score | Swarthmore Box Score

Bronx, N.Y. – (December 1, 2018) – Following a loss to #12 Virginia on Friday, the Fordham squash team rebounded with a pair of victories on Saturday at the Lombardi Center Squash Courts.

The two wins puts Fordham's record at 9-4 on the year.

The Rams kicked off Saturday with a 6-3 win over Washington University in St. Louis.  Fordham got the services back of first position player Patrick Rodden after missing Friday's match.  However, the Rams would lose Roddin in the fifth game against Russell Scharf, as a collision with Scharf injured Roddin.  Roddin was awarded a technical victory due to the injury as he was unable to continue.

Fordham also earned wins at the second, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh slots.  Griffin Fitzgerald downed Reid Parisi, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4, and 11-5, at the #2 position, followed by a win by Winthrop Reed at the #4 slot over Bo Anderson, 11-8, 11-9, 3-11, and 11-4.

Justin Deckoff (#6 – 11-9, 11-6, 11-2) and Dylan Panichello (#7 – 11-3, 11-5, 11-1) earned three-game victories over Atri Bhattacharayya and Apaar Anand, respectively, while Justin Esposito need to go the distance against Chris Ferguson at the fifth position, earning an 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, and 12-10 win for the final point for Fordham.

In the second match of the day, Fordham defeated Swarthmore, 7-1.

As neither squad had a ninth player, while Roddin was unable to go, Swarthmore held a 1-0 lead before any match got started.  The Rams responded by winning all seven matches in three games each.  Fitzgerald led the way at the top spot with an 11-8, 13-11, and 11-3 win over Davy Qi.

Reed, Esposito, Deckoff and Panichello each earned a second individual win on the day, with Tommy White defeating Nate Sandalow-Ash, 11-5, 11-7, and 11-8, at the second slot for his first win of the weekend.  George Holiat also picked up his first win of the weekend with an 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 win over James Sutton at the seven slot.

The Rams are back at it on Sunday with a 9:00 AM match against Lehigh and a 4:30 PM match against Bryant.
