Swimming Preliminaries
Bronx, N.Y. – (November 17, 2018) – The Fordham swimming & diving teams continued its run at the annual Bucknell Invitational on Saturday with some outstanding performances on day two. The Fordham women are still second in the team standings with 850 points behind only Towson (957), while the men remain in seventh with 476.5 points.
The day was highlighted by three event wins for the Fordham women, led by
Michelle Martin. Martin captured first in the 100 butterfly in 54.47 seconds and then followed by winning the 100 backstroke in 55.09 seconds. The final event win came in the 800 freestyle relay, where Tara Burnner,
Kysha Marie Altura,
Paulina Watson, and
Caitlin McNary took the top spot in 7:26.09.
The second day of finals began with the 200 medley relay, where the women's team of Martin,
Milly Furneaux, Brunner, and
Samantha McDonald took 2
nd in 1:43.05, with the men's group of
Auston Ramsay,
Travis Monahan,
A.J. Frakes, and
Bryce Bollesen grabbing sixth in 1:32.33.
Next was the 400 IM event, which saw a total of five women and two men score for the Rams.
Jacqueline Dominger was the top finisher for the women in sixth place in 4:27.76, while
Greg Lombana was 14
th for the men in 4:09.60.
Besides Martin's win the 100 butterfly, six other women scored for the Rams, headlined with Brunner in third (55.15),
Kiara Norris in tenth (56.85), and
Hannah McGee in 11
th (56.76).
A.J. Frakes was the top men's finisher, winning the "C" final for 17
th overall in 51.60 seconds.
In the 200 freestyle, the Rams had ten scorers and four top ten finishers. McNary was fifth in the women's event in 1:50.90, followed in by a 6
th place finish by Altura (1:52.09) and a 10
th place spot for Watson in 1:52.27.
Joseph Vizza wrapped up the top ten finishes in the 200 freestyle by taking fifth in 1:41.62.
Five Rams scored in the 100 breaststroke, led by
Milly Furneaux in fourth place in a school record time of 1:03.21, while
Travis Monahan was fifth on the men's side in 56.82. The previous mark in the women's 100 breaststroke was 1:03.42, set by Kelly Carroll in 2014.
The final individual swimming event was the 100 backstroke that had 10
th other performers score besides Martin who won the event.
Naima Mackrel was the next best female performer in 11
th in 57.10 seconds, while on the men's side Ramsay posted a time of 51.96 seconds, which was good for eighth overall.
In diving,
Diego Perez was Fordham's top performer in the one-meter dive taking ninth place with a point total of 173.95.
After diving and the women's 800 freestyle relay win, the last event was the men's 800 freestyle team, where the team of
Danny McGowan,
Christopher Sleutjes, Clarke, and Vizza placed 12
th in 7:00.10.
The Bucknell Invitational concludes on Sunday.
