Fordham men's tennis coach
Mike Sowter has announced the addition of five student-athletes for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
The list of players include:
Jeremy Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa), Steven Duka (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), Gabriel Mashaal (Montreal, Quebec/L.C.C.), Fabian Mauritzson (Bradenton, Florida/IMG Academy), Allen Thornes (Laguna Niguel, Calif. / Crean Lutheran).

Frank Russo and I are really excited about the future of the Fordham men's tennis team with the addition of our five freshmen," said Sowter. "Each of these young men are high character individuals that will be great ambassadors for the tennis program and the university. They are all very good recruits that will succeed both on the court and in the classroom and we're looking forward to seeing how they perform this fall. If they continue to work hard and show the drive and determination that we have seen so far, I am confident that this group is going to put us in a position to push higher in the Atlantic 10 standings."
Chung was a member of the tennis team at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California, where he served as team captain. He was the Bay League Doubles Champion and was named Bay League Most Outstanding Player, Bay League MVP, and First-Team All-Area.
Duka played three years at Mahopac High School in Mahopac, N.Y., where he was a three year team captain and team MVP. He was undefeated in league matches at 1st singles as a sophomore. He earned All-League, All-Section, All-Conference selection all three years, was a NYSPHSSA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient all three years. Duka was also a
U18 JTT Sectional Finalist. Academically, he was a member of the National Honor Society, National Italian Honor Society and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class.
Mashaal was a member of the tennis team at L.C.C. (Lower Canada College) in Montreal, Canada. He captained his middle and high school tennis teams to five city championships (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) while winning the singles titles in 2013, 2014, 2015. Mashaal earned GMAA MVP in 2015.
Mauritzson is a graduate of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Prior to the IMG Academy, he attended Rosendalsgymnasiet in Uppsala, Sweden. Mauritzson is a two-time U18 regional runner up. He won a regional club championship with UTK (Upsala Tennisklubb).
Thornes played for the tennis team at Crean Lutheran High School in Laguna Niguel, California, where he served as a two year team captain and MVP. He was the League Singles Champion his junior year and League Doubles Champion his senior year. Thornes was the League Singles Champion and was named first-team All-State two years and was CIF SS Team runner up in 2016 season. Academically, Thornes was a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and graduated Suma Cum Lade.
