2016 MLB Draft Tracker

Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham University junior pitcher Greg Weissert (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and senior pitcher Joseph Serrapica (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) became the 33rd and 34th Rams ever to be taken in the MLB Draft as both were selected in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.  Weissert was selected in the 18th round by the New York Yankees and Serrapica was selected in the 24th round by the Tampa Bay Rays.

With the two selections, it marks the eighth time, and second straight year, since the MLB Draft started that multiple Rams have gone in the same draft.  Last year, pitcher Brett Kennedy was drafted by the San Diego Padres (11th round) and catcher Charles Galiano (40th round) was tabbed by the Milwaukee Brewers.  In 2011, pitchers Nick Martinez (18th round - Texas) and Max Krakowiak (48th round – Seattle) were taken.

Weissert was a part of the Rams' starting rotation all season long, starting all 14 games he appeared in this spring. He tied for the team lead in wins with five, while ranking second in innings pitched (78.0) and strikeouts (82). His 82 strikeouts tied for the 11th-best total in school history. Weissert registered a 4.04 ERA, while holding opponents to a .227 opponent batting average and was impressive in Atlantic 10 play, going 5-0 with a 3.80 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched.

Weissert has a career record of 11-10 with four saves. He moved into 12th place on the Rams' career strikeout list with 186.

Serrapica served primarily a starting pitcher for the Rams in 2016, making 14 starts of his 18 appearances. He tied for the team-lead in wins with five, while having a team-high 84.0 innings pitched and 92 strikeouts, all of which were career-highs. His 92 strikeouts ranked as the sixth-best single season total in Fordham history. Serrapica posted a 3.54 ERA with one complete game and one save and held opponents to a .247 batting average. He was impressive in conference play, registering a 4-1 record and a save with a 2.63 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 41.0 innings pitched while limiting conference batters hit just .234 on the season.

Over the four past years, Serrapica amassed eight career wins with five saves. He moved into a tie for 15th on Fordham's all-time strikeout list with 164.
