Lewisburg, Pa. – After a couple of weeks of training, the Fordham swimming & diving team was back in action on Friday at the three-day Bucknell Invitational, held at the Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. After day one's event, the Rams are third in the women's competition and fourth in the men's.
On the women's side, Towson leads with 413.5 points, followed by Bucknell (366), Fordham (306), Georgetown (301.5), North Dakota (288), La Salle (151), UMass (103), and Binghamton (87).
Fordham was led individually by senior
Megan Polaha, who won the 200 individual medley event in 2:01.97. She was one of six Rams to score in the 200 IM, with
Marie Feneron placing seventh (2:04.84),
Amelia Bullock in ninth (2:04.29),
Morgan Fairclough in 15
th (2:08.88),
Nele Albers in 21
st (2:08.97), and
Jacqueline Dominger in 22
nd (2:08.73).
The Rams also scored four times in the 500 freestyle event and the one-meter dive. In the 500 freestyle,
Kalena Laurent was the top performer in sixth place at 4:59.89, with
Erin McBride winning the "B" final for ninth place in 5:00.05.
Chloe Mitchell placed 13
th in the event (5:02.49), while Cat Alabanza was 23
rd in 5:09.86.
Then in the one-meter dive,
Wendy Espina-Esquivel finished as the top Ram, taking fourth place with a score of 265.65 points, and was followed by
Stephanie Kerkeles in 13
th (20.455),
Natalie Wodniak in 15
th (189.85), and
Molly Dunn in 19
th (176.10).
The final individual scorers for Fordham came in the 50 freestyle, where
Samantha McDonald took 18
th in 23.94 seconds and
Theresa Mullen was 20
th (24.09).
In women's relay action, the 200 freestyle relay of McBride, McDonald, Bullock, and Mullen took third in 1:35.31, while the 400 medley relay team of Fairclough, Bullock, Polaha, and Mullen was fourth in 3:46.51.
Over on the men's side, La Salle holds the top spot with 343 points, but is closely followed by Towson (334), North Dakota (317), Fordham (277), Bucknell (236), Georgetown (219), Binghamton (153), UMass (110), and Susquehanna (12).
Travis Monahan
Fordham kicked off the men's competition by placing second in the 200 freestyle relay, as
Travis Monahan,
Kevin Berry,
Joseph Vizza, and
Joe Mercurio, clocked in at 1:22.25.
Vizza then competed in the 500 freestyle, taking fifth overall in 4:33.23, while
Liam Semple was seventh in 4:37.31. Chris Sleutjes also scored in the 500 freestyle, taking tenth in 4:34.90.
The Rams had two scorers in both the 200 individual medley and the three-meter dive events. In the 200 IM,
Isiah Magsino was 12
th in 1:52.82 with
Chris Viera finishing 14
th in 1:53.13. Then in the three-meter dive,
Colin Esterine-Reid posted a score of 226.30, which was good for 11
th, with
Christopher Craig posting a score of 159.90 for 16
th place.
The best scoring event of the day though was the 50 freestyle with five Rams collecting points. Monahan was the top finisher in third place at 20.62 seconds, while Mercurio was sixth in 21.08 seconds. Berry (13
th – 21.48),
Jack Madigan (20
th – 21.63), and Semple (22
nd – 21.65) also scored in the event.
The Fordham men concluded the day with a fourth place finish in the 400 medley relay, where
Miguel Mattox, Monahan,
Tommy Christensen, and Vizza clocked in at 3:22.47.
Day two of competition begins on Saturday at 10:00 AM with preliminary action with finals at 6:00 PM.
