Swimming & Diving Continues Competition at Bucknell Invitational

Joseph Vizza Breaks School Record in the 200 Freestyle Event; Polaha and Bullock Win Events in Women’s Competition

Lewisburg, Pa. – Day two of the Bucknell Invitational has concluded at the Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and the Fordham swimming & diving team stands in fourth place in both the men's and women's competitions.
 
The big headline from Saturday came from a trio of swimmers, including two freshmen.  Senior Megan Polaha kicked things off by winning an individual event for the second straight day, as she captured the 400 individual medley event in 4:20.69.  Then one event later, freshman Amelia Bullock took first in the 100 butterfly event, clocking in at 54.84, with Polaha taking fourth in 55.85 seconds.  Bullock also scored in the 100 breaststroke event, winning the "B" final for ninth overall in 1:04.60.
 
The other freshman making headlines was Joseph Vizza in the men's competition, as he broke the school record in the 200 freestyle event with a time of 1:38.85, good for second place.  The previous record was 1:39.37, set by Shintaro Noguchi in 2013.  In addition to the school record, he also placed 11th overall in the 100 backstroke in 51.86 seconds.
 
On top of those performances, the Rams had a very strong day, which started in the 200 medley relay.  The women's team of Morgan Fairclough, Bullock, Polaha, and Theresa Mullen placed fifth in 1:45.12, while the men's squad of Isiah Magsino, Travis Monahan, Kevin Berry and Joe Mercurio placed fourth in 1:32.21.
 
The first individual event was the 400 IM, where four women's swimmers joined Polaha in the scoring for that event.  Marie Feneron was fifth overall in 4:27.33 with Nele Albers taking eighth in 4:36.00.  Jacqueline Dominger tied for the top spot in the "B" final for ninth overall in 4:28.65 with Cat Alabanza winning the "C" final for 17th overall in 4:32.15.  Four men's swimmers also scored in the 400 IM, led by Greg Lombana winning the "C" final in 4:05.85.  He was followed by Manny Avila in 21st (4:08.97), Connor Griffin in 22nd (4:10.92), and Ethan D'Arcangelo in 23rd (4:13.23).
 
Joining Polaha and Bullock in scoring in the 100 butterfly was Kalena Laurent, who was 13th in 56.88.  On the men's side, Tommy Christensen was the top time, tying for sixth in 50.57 seconds, followed by Mercurio in eighth (51.23), Chris Viera in 12th (51.02), and Berry in 14th (51.19).

In the 200 freestyle, three women's swimmers made the "A" final, as Chloe Mitchell was fourth in 1:52.62, followed by Mullen in sixth (1:52.75) and Laurent in seventh (1:53.22).  Erin McBride also scored in the event, placing 11th overall (1:53.75).  Over on the men's side, Liam Semple joined Vizza in the scoring, as he took 18th overall in 1:43.22.
 
The Rams had three women and three men score in the 100 breaststroke.  Amie Ko (1:06.92) and Gabrielle Celia (1:07.01) finished 18th and 19th respectively, joining Bullock's ninth place finish.  On the men's side, Monahan placed second overall in 56.15 seconds, while Jack Madigan (59.71) and Robert Simkins (1:00.68) were 23rd and 24th overall, respectively.
 
The final individual swimming event was the 100 backstroke, where three women and five men scored for Fordham.  Fairclough won the women's "B" final for ninth overall in 56.76 seconds, followed by Julia Day in 18th (57.93) and Mullen in 23rd (59.23).  On the men's side, Magsino and Miguel Mattox made the "A" final, taking fifth (50.89) and sixth (51.17) respectively, while Vizza, D'Arcangelo (15th – 52.74), and Mercurio (24th – 54.23) also scored.
 
The night ended with the men's one-meter dive and the 800 freestyle relay.  Colin Esterine-Reid placed 14th in the one meter dive with a score of 203.95 with Christopher Craig right behind him in 15th place (192.50).
 
In the 800 freestyle relay, the women's team of Laurent, McBride, Mitchell, and Polaha placed third in 7:36.42, while Semple, Monahan, Viera and Vizza placed fourth in the men's event in 6:49.48.
 
The Bucknell Invitational concludes on Sunday.
