Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham men's and women's swimming and diving squads opened the 2016-17 season tonight by hosting Marist College in the Messmore Aquatics Center and both teams opened on a high note as the men defeated the Red Foxes, 138-103, and the women won by a score of 176-67.

Both the Fordham men and women had four multi-event winners. On the women's side,
Megan Polaha won the 200 IM in 2:08.25 and then took first in the 200 butterfly in 2:03.06 while
Erin McBride placed first in both the 200 free in 1:54.82 and the 500 free in 5:08.28. The other multi-event winners for the women were
Tara Brunner, who was first to touch in the 50 free in 24.48 and the 100 free in 53.04; and
Wendy Espina-Esquivel, who on both boards, scoring 276.00 point on the one meter board and 300.30 on the three meter board.

The men were led by
Liam Semple, who won the 500 free in 4:42.79 and the 1000 free 9:42.16, while
Chris Viera won the 200 IM in 1:56.49 and also touched first in the 200 butterfly in 1:55.56. The other multi-event winners for the men were
Travis Monahan, who took first in the 50 free in 21.69 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.31, and
Joseph Vizza, who was victorious in both the 100 free in 46.45 and the 200 free in 1:42.16.

Other event winners for the women included
Catherine Alabanza, who placed first in the 200 backstroke in 2:05.65 while also taking second in the 200 free (1:55.94) and
Chloe Mitchell, who won the 1000 free in 10:36.07.

Also winning for the men was
Miguel Mattox, who took the 200 backstroke in 1:53.39.

In relay action, the women's 400 medley relay of
Morgan Fairclough, Polaha,
Amelia Bullock and
Tara Brunner placed first in 3:54.38 and the Fordham B team of Alabanza,
Gabrielle Celia,
Jacqueline Dominger and
Theresa Mullen took second in 3:58.68.

The women's 400 free relay of McBride, Mitchell, Fairclough and
Kalena Laurent won in a time of 3:38.30 and the Fordham B squad of
Natalie Brown,
Samantha McDonald,
Natalie Malicki and
Julia Day placed second in 3:42.43.

In men's relays, the Fordham 400 medley of Mattox, Monahan, Viera and Vizza won the event in 3:27.19 while the 400 free relay of Semple,
Jack Madigan, Mattox and
Joe Mercurio placed second in 3:12.39.

The Fordham men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday, October 28, as they host the Fairfield University Stags in the Messmore Aquatics at 5:00 p.m.
