Box Score West Point, N.Y. – The Fordham women's tennis team competed in the 2015 Army Invitational over the weekend where
Mayu Sato advanced to the quarterfinals at first singles.
Sato opened play in first singles with hard fought win over Quinnipiac's Sophia Dzulynsky, dropping the first set, 6-2, but coming back to take the second, 6-2, and the tiebreaker, 11-9. She then upended Alana Prinos of Providence in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, before falling to LIU's Anna Grigoryan in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-3.
Alexis Zobeideh also competed in first singles for the Rams, dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Katie DeRienzo of Sacred Heart in the first round. She then defeated Saint Peter's Mali Hedberg in the consolation bracket, 8-0, before losing to Sophia Geier from Akron, 8-3.
In second singles, Fordham
Estelle Wong opened play falling to Albany's Paulina Torres, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3, and then was upended by Briana Leonard from Bryant in the consolation bracket, 8-6.
Hannah Drayton also competed at second singles for the Rams, losing to Alba Sala from Albany in a close first round match, dropping the first set, 7-5, but winning the second, 6-4, before coming up short in the tiebreaker, 10-7. Drayton then beat Ariel Shulman from Marist 8-1 in the first round of the consolation bracket before losing to Carlie Knezevich from Akron 8-3.
In third singles action,
Whitney Weisberg fell to LIU's Rianne van Son, 6-0, 6-0, and then to Amanda Pitcocco of Seton Hall in the consolation bracket, 8-2.
In fourth singles play,
Destiny Grunin fell to Seton Hall's Isabell Klingert, losing the first set, 6-2, winning the second, 6-4, and then dropping a hard-fought tiebreaker, 15-13.
Carolina Sa and
Gianna Insogna also competed in fourth singles where Sa withdrew from a first round match with Binghamton's Olga Ostrovestsky. Ostrovestsky then upended Insogna in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles play, Zobeideh and Mayu advanced to the semifinals in first doubles. The pair opened play with a 6-4 win over Albany's Isadora Pejovic and Alba Sala and then knocked off Priyanka Shah and Marika Cusick of Cornell, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Zobeideh and Mayu defeated St. Bonaventure's Mara Martinez-Santor and Gabbie Bowe, 6-2, before falling in the semifinals to Emma Alderman and Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva from Connecticut, 6-2.
Drayton and Wong also competed in first doubles, defeating Albany's Jovana Kenic and Chassidy King, 6-2, before losing to Jacquelyn Fitz-Rando and Srna Stosljevic from Connecticut, 6-2.
Grunin and Insgona competed at second doubles, defeating Providence's Risa Takanaka and Grace Biaciunas, 6-4, before being upended by Julian Mok and Arianna Spirtos from Army, 7-6.
In third doubles, Fordham's Sa and Weisberg fell to Malin Leysen and Meriam Rhallab of LIU, 6-0.
The Rams return to action on October 9 when they open play at the Albany Invitational.
