Fairfield, Conn. – The Fordham University women's tennis squad opened the 2015 fall season at the Sacred Heart Doubles Invitational on Saturday where newcomers Hannah Drayton and Mayu Sato teamed up to win the A flight while
Estelle Wong and
Whitney Weisberg took the B flight.
Drayton and Sato opened play in the A flight (red) with a 6-3 win over Hartford's Katherine Long and Skylar Schaar and then upended Sacred Heart's Katie DeRienzo and Sabrina Navarro, 6-3. In their next match, the Ram duo took care of Quinnipiac's Sophia Dzulynsky and Jennifer Lu, 6-2, before facing off against their Fordham teammates Lexi Zobeideh and
Carolina Sa, whom they defeated in a touch fought match, 7-6 (16). Drayton and Sato then completed a perfect invitational with a 6-2 win over Providence's Alana Prinos and Emma Burgess.
Wong and Weisberg opened play at the B flight with a 6-2 victory over Sacred Heart's Lindsey Post and Taylor Gurda and then defeated Quinnipiac's Proyfon Lohaphaisan and Rachel Horton. The duo then upended Providence's Hannah Zangari and Nicole Zytarski, 6-3, and dropped Hartford's Ariel Haber and Meredith Heitland, 7-5. They then wrapped up the title with a 6-0 win over Providence's Jenn DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco.
The other Fordham A flight combination of Zobeideh and Sa opened play with a 6-4 loss to Quinnipiac's Dzulynsky and Lu before defeating Hartford's Long and Schaar. The pair then fell to Providence's Prinos and Burgess, 6-0, before the loss to their Fordham teammates. The pair closed out the tournament with a 6-1 loss to Sacred Heart's DeRienzo and Navarro.
At the C flight, Fordham's
Destiny Grunin and Gianna Insogna opened play with 6-2 win over Providence's Katie Marvin and Risa Takanaka and then picked up a 6-1 win over Providence's Brooke Burnside and Grace Biaciunas. Sacred Heart's Paige Olson and Olivia Podsiebierski upended the Fordham pair, 6-2, before the Rams defeated Quinnipiac's Adrian Young and Alex Mircea, 6-2, and Sacred Heart's Tori Oates and Claudia Ruiz, 6-1.
The Rams return to action when they compete at the Quinnipiac Invitational from September 18-20.
