Fordham University junior pitcher
Brett Kennedy (Brigantine, N.J./Atlantic City HS) joined an exclusive group of Ram baseball players on Wednesday, as he became the 31
st Ram to be taken in the MLB Draft. He was selected in the 11
th round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres.
Kennedy is Fordham's first MLB draft pick since 2011 when Rams had a pair of draft picks in pitchers Nick Martinez (18
th round - Texas) and Max Krakowiak (48
th round – Seattle). This also marks the second time San Diego has drafted a Fordham player, as the Padres took Fordham Athletics Hall of Famer Tom Davis in the 16
th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.
Brett Kennedy Kennedy just completed his junior season, helping Fordham to their second straight appearance at the Atlantic 10 Championship. He finished the year as the Rams' top arm, leading the team in starts (15), wins (6), innings pitched (87.0), and strikeouts (97), while finishing with a 4.14 ERA and just 20 walks. He was better in Atlantic 10 play, registering a 5-3 record with a 3.51 ERA in 51.1 innings. He also finished league action with 55 strikeouts to just eight walks.
In his final start of the regular season against Dayton, Kennedy tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts and allowed just one run on four hits in a win over the Flyers, which earned him Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week honors and helped Fordham secure a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship. He also moved into second place on Fordham's career strikeouts list, ending the year with 218 through three seasons. His 97 strikeouts this year also tied for the fourth-highest single season mark ever at Fordham, and was a big part of the Fordham pitching staff setting a new team record with 392 strikeouts, breaking the old mark of 387, set in 1999.
