Doubles ResultsAlbany, N.Y. – The Fordham women's tennis squad competed at the Great Dane Invitational at the University at Albany on October 10 and 11 with
Mayu Sato winning the Purple singles title (defeating teammate
Estelle Wong in the finals) and Sato teamed with
Alexis Zobeideh to win the doubles title.
Sato opened play in the Purple singles with two tough-fought wins, the first over Victoria Martinez of Villanova as Sato dropped the first set, 6-3, before winning the second, 6-2, and the tiebreaker, 10-5, and then defeating FDU's Gisela Castany, dropping the first set, 7-5, but coming back to win the second, 7-6, and the tiebreaker, 10-5. She then upended Paulina Torres of Albany in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1, before besting Wong in the finals, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles action, Sato teamed with Zobeideh to win their first match, a 7-5 decision over Chassidy King and Mireille Hermans from Albany before defeating Victoria Martinez and Sydney King of Villanova, 6-3. In the finals, Sato and Zobeideh outlasted FDU's Katarina Pavlovic and Gisela Castany, 7-6.
Wong opened play in Purple singles with a three-set win over Albany's Isadora Pejovic, taking the first set, 7-6, dropping the second, 6-3, but coming back to win a thrilling tiebreaker, 13-11. Wong then bested Samantha Schafer of Villanova in straights sets in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2 and Villanova's Lindsey Evans in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2.

Destiny GruninIn Gold singles play,
Destiny Grunin defeated Villanova's Sydney King in the first round, 6-2, 6-2 and then won by default over Ana Glumac from Albany in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Grunin pulled out a three-set win over Katarina Pavlovic from FDU, losing the first set, 6-2, but taking the second, 7-6, and the tiebreaker, 10-5. In the finals, Grunin was upended by Albany's Jovana Kenic, 6-1, 6-4.
Fordham's
Gianna Insogna also competed in Gold singles, opening the tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Villanova's Ellie Zimmerman before falling to Dajana Ognjenovic of Albany in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-2.
In other Gold singles play, Fordham's
Whitney Weisberg fell to Kenic in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, and then fell to Villanova's Alexandra Krogius in the consolation round, 8-1. But Weisberg defeated Eliza Dordelman from Villanova in the consolation reprieve, 8-1, before suffering an 8-1 loss to Villanova's Sydney King.
Hannah Drayton also competed in Purple singles for Fordham, defeating Nicole Chis of FDU in the first round, 6-3, 6-4, before falling to Albany's Paulina Torres in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 1-6, 10-5. Drayton came back to defeat FDU's Gisela Castany by default in the consolation bracket before falling to Paulina Bajet of Villanova, 8-6.
Also competing in Purple singles was
Alexis Zobeideh, who fell to Villanova's Paulina Bajet, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round and Alba Sala from Albany in the consolation bracket, 8-1. However, Zobeideh upended Albany's Isadora Pejovic in the consolation reprieve, 9-7, before losing to Tori Smyth of Villanova, 8-2.
In other doubles action, Drayton and Wong opened play with a 6-1 loss to Villanova's Lindsey Evans and Tori Smyth but came back to win the consolation bracket, opening the bracket with a 6-1 win over Aphrah Brokaw and Linley Busby from Villanova before upending Nicole Chis from FDU and Weisberg in the semifinals, 6-2. In the finals, Drayton and Wong defeated FDU's Shreya Pasricha and Alex Bryant, 7-5.
Grunin and Insogna fell to Villanova's Victoria Martinez and Sydney King in the first round, 6-1, and then dropped a 6-4 decision to Alex Bryant and Shreya Pasricha for FDU in the consolation bracket. In the consolation reprieve bracket, Insgona and Grunin defeated Villanova's Aphrah Brokaw and Linley Busby, 7-5.
The Rams return to action on Monday, October 19, as they face Rutgers University at the East Brunswick Racquet Club at 2:00 p.m.
