Fordham Game NotesÂ
Bronx, N.Y. (August 28, 2014) – The Fordham University football Rams are ready to open the 2014 season as they host the Saint Francis University Red Flash on Saturday, August 30, on Jack Coffey Field at 6:00 p.m.
Â
The game will be streamed live on the Patrick League Network and can also be heard live on WFUV (90.7 FM) and on
WFUV.org with Mike Watts (p-b-p) and Nick Logerfo (color) handling the announcing chores and DJ Sixsmith on the sidelines.
Â
#11/12 Fordham enters the season after going 12-2 last year and advancing to the second round of the NCAA FCS Championship. Saint Francis enters the game after compiling a 5-6 record last fall.
Â
A few notes on the game:
Â
Jarred BrevardJoining captains
Stephen Hodge,
Dan Light and
Ian Williams will be Fordham game captains
Brian Wetzel (offense),
DeAndre Slate (defense) and
Michael Marando (special teams)
Â
The guest coach will be Dr. David Glenwick, a professor of psychology and the faculty athletic representative
Â
The scout players of the week were announced following practice:
Jarred Brevard (offense),
Alex Leo (defense) and
David Conroy (special teams)
Â
This will be the third meeting between the two schools with the Rams winning the first two matchups, including a 38-20 win on DeGol Field last September 28 as
Mike Nebrich connected on 31 of 41 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns and
Carlton Koonce rushed 23 times for 126 yards and a score
Â
Fordham is 47-29 all-time in season openers since 1920 (last year's season-opening win over
Rhode Island was Fordham's second straight)
Â
On Jack Coffey Field, the Rams have won their past six home openers, including the win over Rhode Island last year
Â
And a few observations from 2014 camp:
Â
Best Post Touchdown Dunk: Sophomore receiver
Kyvaune Brammer who got some vertical and threw it down after a score
Â
Worst  Post Touchdown Dunk: Junior linebacker
Andrew Erenberg who did his best but couldn't quite get his 5'9" frame up to the cross bar
Â
Most Likely to Follow the PGA Tour: Senior wide receiver
Brian Wetzel, whose high school friend, Jordan Spieth, is on the PGA Tour, finishing tied for second at the Masters in April
Â
Most Likely to Follow the ATP Tour: Junior offensive lineman
Garrick Mayweather, Jr., who played tennis in high school, winning a regional title as a junior (can't imagine the look on the face of his opponent as he looked across the net at his 6'3, 300-pound opponent
Â
Best Outing: The entire Fordham squad attended a viewing of
When the Game Stand Tall, a movie based on the De La Salle High School football team, a team that won 151 straight games from 1992-2004. The film focuses on the importance of remaining together as a team, ignoring all the hubris that comes with success and dedicating yourself to striving for perfection, themes that Fordham head coach
Joe Moorhead stresses with the Rams
Â
Best Nickname of Camp: Director of Football Operations
Greg Marmaros earned the nickname "Chicken Parm Marm" for his choice of the sandwich as a snack on multiple nights
Â
Most Confusing Name:
Jack Treanor (pronounced trainer). For the first week or so, every time his name was called by a coach, head athlete trainer Vinny Porricelli and his associate director
Dave Zippo started running towards the coach, thinking a man was down
Â
The MVPs of Camp: Easy call here, the athletic training staff. The aforementioned Porricelli and Zippo did their best at keeping the players healthy and treating those who were hurt, while their staff did a yeoman's job at making sure the Rams stayed hydrated throughout every practice
