Softball Adds Pair of Transfers for 2015

Lindsay Mayer and Ally Vergona Will Suit Up for The Rams This Spring

BRONX, N.Y.- Gearing up for a title defense in the spring, Fordham Softball Head Coach Bridget Orchard has announced the addition of two transfer students to her roster for the 2015 campaign.

Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln), who was a freshman standout at Virginia last season, and Ally Vergona (Paramus, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy), who played at UNC-Greensboro, will both suit up in maroon and white for the first time this coming spring.

"We are very excited about the addition of Lindsay and Ally to our softball family," said Orchard.  "They both will be looking to compete and contribute right away offensively and defensively."

Mayer, a Lincoln, R.I., product, started all 51 games for the Cavaliers as a freshman, leading the team with 37 hits.  On the season, Mayer batted .278 with ten doubles and 17 RBIs, while ranking second on the squad in runs scored with 20.  The 5-4 shortstop recorded seven multi-hit games in her rookie campaign, including three three-hit performances.

"Lindsay is coming off a great freshman year at UVA playing against some of the best teams in the nation," said Orchard.  "Her experience will be huge coming into the season, as we lost our shortstop and power hitter Elise Fortier."

In addition to her prowess at the plate, Mayer also made 18 appearances in the circle for Virginia, including one complete game.

The Ocean State native was one of the premier high school players in New England at Lincoln, twice earning Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year honors (2012 and 2013).  Mayer was also a three-time All-Rhode Island First Team selection and a three-time first team all-division selection.

Vergona comes to the Rams following a one year stint with the Spartans, where she played in 20 games and made 11 starts behind the plate.  The Paramus, N.J., native hit .233 on the year, registering seven hits and knocking in five runs.  Vergona also recorded five walks, turning in an OBP of just under .400.

"Ally had an incredible high school career playing with one of the best teams in the area," said Orchard. "She will add depth to our catching staff and help replace offensive power that we lost with graduating seniors."

A local product, Vergona helped lead Immaculate Heart Academy to a 31-2 record and number two state ranking her senior year in 2013.  During that campaign, Vergona batted at a .446 clip with 45 hits, 29 RBIs, 22 runs scored, four home runs and 16 doubles en route to earning spots on the NFCA All-Region First Team and Max Preps All-America Team.  As a junior in 2012, Vergona was named Second Team NFCA All-Region, capping a year in which her team went 32-0.
